Austria
At the heart of the Alps, Austria offers a wealth of opportunities for walking, cycling and skiing. The high Austrian Alps cover approximately two-thirds of the country, with the remainder comprising the flatter plains top the north and the Danube Valley.
High Tyrolean Mountains
The wonderful mountains of the Tyrol region make it a natural destination for a walking holiday. With an excellent hotel and unparalleled selection of walks for all abilities, its not hard to see why Mayrhofen is our most popular overseas holiday. On a guided Classic Walking holiday you'll stay at the family-run Hotel Waldheim, consistently rated as one of the very best by our guests. With a range of walks from gentle alpine rambles to challenging high routes, this is a destination that really does have something for everybody.
Families are also well catered for on our family walking and multi-activity adventure holidays.
Further west is the Oetz Valley, another great walking destination. Based in the village of Solden, our guided classic walking holidays are developing into another firm favourite.
Exploring the Austrian Lake District
In the Salzkammergut region you'll find the Austrian Lake District; a captivating area of high mountains, brooding lakes and traditional villages. The capital of this area is Salzburg, a beautiful city with a rich musical heritage that is famous as being Mozart's birthplace. A visit to Salzburg can be incorporated into any of our holidays to this part of Austria.
One of the most attractive spots is Lake Wolfgang, a base for our Classic Walking holidays. Here you'll have a choice of guided walks each day with a variety of lakeside paths, peaceful meadows and more challenging walks for those who wish. Alternatively you may prefer our self-guided Austrian Lake District holiday. With plenty of time to travel on the lake ferries, explore the region's attractive towns and enjoy leisurely walks, this is a great holiday for those who enjoy taking their time to explore the countryside. Finally you can also explore the area by bike on our Austrian Lakes and Mountains. Starting in Salzburg you'll cycle alongside rivers and lakes with a majestic backdrop of mountains all around.
City Break
Although Austria is probably best known for its mountains and countryside, its cultured cities are every bit as appealling. Once the heart of the Habsbury Empire, Vienna has plenty of interest for a guided city break. Visit famous sights such as the Imperial Palace and Spanish Riding School, as well as spending a full day in the fascinating Slovak capital of Bratislava.
Cycling along the Inn and Danube
Starting at Innsbruck in the Austrian Tyrol, our independent cycling tour along the River Inn will take you through outstanding scenery. Cycling beside the river we head first for the historic fortress at Kufstein before crossing the border into Germany and continuing our journey to Passau.
The riverside cycle paths beside the Danube offer a memorable route through the Austrian countryside. Starting just across the German border at Passau we offer two holidays that follow this graceful river downstream. On the Leisurely Danube tour complete the section from Passau to Grein; an ideal holiday for families or the more relaxed holiday-maker. Alternatively complete the full route from Passau to Vienna culminating in a visit to one of Europe's most elegant cities. A longer cycling holiday takes you through Austria and Hungary from Vienna to Budapest.
Lake Constance
Our most popular cycling holiday is around the shores of Lake Constance. This varied holiday takes you through Switzerland, Germany and Austria with beautiful lake scenery throughout. If you prefer a gentler holiday our Leisurely Lake Constance tour has shorter daily distances and offers plenty of time to visit the attractive lakeside towns, relax in the sun and swim in the lake.
Austria in Winter
In winter the Austrian Alps become a fantastic playground for all outdoor enthusiasts. If you enjoy Downhill Skiing and Snowshoeing, solden in the Oetz Valley has a wide range of slopes and an excellent snow record. For Cross-country Skiing, the Seefeld Plateau is definately the place to be and is considered one of Europe's top locations. Finally, Mayrhofen makes a great base for our Winter Walking and Snowshoeing holidays. Its not suprising that this popular summer resort is also a favorite in the winter too, and offers spectaculor walks in the snow-covered mountains.
