Breathtaking views, crystal clears lakes and attractive flower-filled meadows are your constant companion as you explore the unforgettable scenery of the Austrian Lake District. As the easiest of our Alpine resorts this is a great place for a relaxing walking holiday.

From our base in the lakeside town of Strobl you can take the steamer to the picturesque neighbouring villages of St Wolfgang and St Gilgen. Just an hour away by bus, Salzburg has a fascinating history and makes a very enjoyable free day visit.

Classic Walking programme details

On these holidays there is a choice of two guided walks of varying difficulty each day.

ITINERARY

Day 1: arrival day

Day 2:
follow the historic lakeside path that follows from St Gilgen to the pilgrimage church at St Wolfgang, or ascend onto Plomberg mountain for stunning views over the lake.

Day 3: starting from the high mountain pass at Postalm, explore the surrounding pastures to an outstanding viewpoint, or take a steeper walk to the Bleckwand ridge, before descending to the lake.

Day 4: free day - beautiful Salzburg is just an hour away by bus. Famous as Mozart’s birthplace, the city boasts a rich musical heritage and fine medieval architecture.

Day 5: ascend by cable car to the summit of the Zwolferhorn which rises above St Gilgen, and then enjoy walks to the charming Illingeralm, or descend through the woods to the lakeshore of Fushchlee.

Day 6: visit the picturesque spa town of Bad Goisernl and either follow the ‘saltweg’ trail down the Traun Valley to Bad Ischl, or soak up the views from the wooded ridge above.

Day 7: enjoy a sylvan circuit of the Fuschlsee or ascend to the summit of Vormauerstein for a very different view from this commanding height.

Day 8: departure day or free day with options to take the mountain railway to the top of Schafberg, or visit the world heritage town of Hallstadt.

Day 9: enjoy walks in the in the beautiful Postalm meadows with options to ascend to the summits of Labenberg or Braunedlkogel.

Day 10: walk from Strobl to St Wolfgang passing the secluded Schwartzensee lake or ascend higher to the summit of Almkogel, from where the view stretches right across the Austrian Lake District.

Day 11: departure day

Please Note: The above programme should give you a good feel for the walks at this resort but is subject to change. Each year we listen carefully to the views of our guests and make improvements to our walking programmes. Further information will be sent to you prior to your holiday; however the final selection of walks will be made by your walking leaders.

Local transport to and from walks
Local transport is not included in the cost of your holiday. Please allow €55 (approx £39) per week for transport during the week, excluding your free day. Payable locally in Euros.

Footpath information

Easier Walks: 5 to 8 miles on good lakeside paths, wooded paths and meadows. 300ft to 1,200ft of ascent.
Harder Walks: 6 to 11 miles with some steep and rough ascents. 1,500ft to 2,800ft of ascent.

Making Your Own Travel Arrangements

Flights to Salzburg: Salzburg is the nearest airport to Lake Wolfgang and has regular onward connection by public bus to Strobl.

•  Catch the number 2 tram to the central railway station (every 15mins). From here there are hourly buses to Strobl - see details below.

Flights to Munich: Munich isn't the nearest airport to Strobl, but it does have the best variety of direct flights from the UK. If you are making your own arrangements you may want to consider one of the following options:

www.ba.com flights from Gatwick & Heathrow.

www.easyjet.com flights from Stansted & Edinburgh.

•  To transfer to Lake Wolfgang, one option is to join the HF Holidays' transfer. Please contact our Reservations Dept to book your place and to find out the latest times.

•  Alternatively Munich Airport has its own railway station and you should first take a train to Munich Ost station in the city centre, which takes 30 minutes. Next take a mainline train to Salzburg, from where there are buses to Strobl - see details below.

By Rail: The nearest mainline station to is at Salzburg, and for most people this is the best place to head for. Salzburg is about an hour's bus journey to the west of Lake Wolfgang. Alternatively you could take a branch line train to the nearer station at Bad Ischl, which is about 25 minutes to the east of the hotel. There are excellent bus connections from both Salzburg and Bad Ischl to Strobl. For train times and further information, visit the Austrian railways website: www.oebb.at (change language to English in top right hand corner). This website will also give you times of all forms of public transfort including buses and trams; just enter Strobl as your destination.

By Bus to Strobl: The no.150 bus runs approximately every hour and provides good connections to the Hotel Bergrose. Bus times are available on the Austrian railways website: www.oebb.at . In Salzburg the main bus station is just in front of the main railway station. The final destination for the bus is Bad Ischl, and the journey takes about 1 hour to reach Strobl.

Alternatively if you are taking the train to Bad Ischl, then the buses depart from very close to the station. Take a number 150 or 2560 bus heading towards Salzburg, and alight at Strobl after about 25 minutes.

In Strobl there is a bus stop adjacent to the Hotel Wolfgangseehof.
