Detailed information
| Detailed itinerary |
 |
 |
This scenic route offers easy cycling on cycle paths and
quiet roads, with some undulating sections. |
Day 1: Arrival in Trier
Spend some time exploring what was once an ancient Roman city,
with its famous Porta Nigra gateway, amphitheatre and Roman
Baths. Visit the cathedral, the electoral palace and the Rhine
State Museum, or just relax with a coffee in the beautiful
Market square and take in the atmosphere of Germany's oldest
city.
Day 2: Trier to Trittenheim
26 miles
This morning you collect your bicycles and begin your tour
along the banks of the Mosel River. As you cycle through Scheich
and Polich you will immediately notice that you are already
in the heart of the wine-growing region. On your arrival in
the pretty village of Trittenheim you will have your first
opportunity to taste the Riesling wine for which the region
is famous.
Day 3: Trittenheim to Reil
28 miles
Make an early start today so that you can stop for lunch in
the lovely twin town of Bernkastel-Kues. With its narrow paved
lanes and half-timbered houses, there is plenty to admire
in the town and those with extra energy may enjoy a walk up
to its historic castle. Continue after lunch to Zeltingen
where you catch a ferry to Traben-Trarbach, once the wealthiest
town on the Mosel, famous for its wine and health spa. From
here it is just a few miles more to your overnight stay in
Reil.
Day 4: Reil to Treis-Karden
32 miles
Your tour continues and you pass through the towns of Zell
and Bremm before reaching the romantic medieval town of Cochem.
A visit to the Reichsburg castle that sits above the town
is a must and there is also the chance to take a chair lift
on to the Pinnerberg for views all along the valley. From
here catch the ferry to Treis-Karden for your overnight stay.
Day 5: Treis-Karden to Koblenz
24 miles
On your final day of cycling you will continue past villages
of half-timbered houses and alongside slopes of vineyards
overlooked by castles and forts until you reach the lively
city of Koblenz. The position of the city at the point where
the Mosel and Rhine rivers meet has meant that this has been
an important settlement since even before the Roman times.
Take time to wander through the old town and admire the architecture
of its buildings.
Day 6: End of tour after breakfast
You may have time for some last minute shopping before you
return to the airport.
