Cycle mainly on cycle paths and quiet roads along this
picturesque route, some sections are slightly undulating. |
Day 1: Arrival in Heidelberg
Visit the beautiful preserved old town or take the cable car to the 'Konigstuhl' and the castle. Overnight stay in this old University
town.
Day 2: Heidelberg to Zwingenberg / Bensheim
31 miles
You collect your bicycles and leave Heidelberg, following
the famous Bergstrasse, a road dotted with castles and ancient
monuments. Enjoy the mild climate of this region, where not
just grapes but also figs, peaches and lemons are grown. You
spend the night in 700 year old Zwingenberg or Bensheim.
Day 3: Zwingenberg / Bensheim to Bodenheim or Mainz
25-31 miles
Today you cycle through wine valleys
and cross the Rhine at Gernsheim on a small ferry. Cycling
through countryside and vegetable fields, you come to the
first vineyards of the Pfalz region, passing through some
of the many wine-growing villages in this area. In Nierstein
you can take a boat trip on the Rhine, and you finish in Bodenheim or Mainz
for your overnight stay.
Day 4: Bodenheim or Mainz to Rüdesheim
22-28 miles
Today you cycle along the Rhine and see the beautiful villages
of Eltville and Adelshöfen before reaching one of the
best known wine resorts, Rüdesheim. Go by cable car to
the top of the mountain for a wonderful view of the Rhine
valley, and take the opportunity to sample the local wine.
Your overnight stay is in Rüdesheim-Assmannshausen or
in Bingen on the other side of the Rhine.
Day 5: Rüdesheim to Boppard
25 miles
This journey through the romantic middle Rhine valley is one
of the highlights of the tour. You follow the river past old
castles and vineyards and onto the wine resort of Bacharach,
before passing the Lorelei, a perilous section of the river
made infamous by legends of mermaids.
Day 6: Boppard to Koblenz
16 miles
The route takes you through cherry orchards and small, attractive
towns. You can visit the site where the Mosel and Rhine rivers
meet, and there is another opportunity to take a cable car
up the hill for a spectacular view of the Rhine valley. You
spend the night in Koblenz.
Day 7: End of tour after breakfast
