Detailed itinerary

This classic tour takes you along the Danube on mainly flat cycle paths. You will encounter some roads when coming into towns to reach your evening accommodation.

Day 1: Arrival in Passau
You can collect your bicycles and information packs before exploring the beautiful town of Passau.

Day 2: Passau to Schlögen
26 miles
Cycle through the deep gorges that have been cut out of the Bavarian woodland. You continue past castles and pretty villages to the small town of Schlögen.

Day 3: Schlögen to Linz
22 miles by bicycle & 16 miles by train or ferry*
Today you cycle through the famous Donau bend the 'Schlinge'. You continue along this delightful route through areas of outstanding natural beauty to Aschach. You then cycle on to Linz, from where you can take a city tour or a trip by cable car to the Pöstlingberg, a baroque pilgrimage church and a fairytale grotto.

*Ferry transfer on Thursdays, rail transfer all other days.

Day 4: Linz to Perg
30 miles
You start with a short detour to St Florian Monastery and the pilgrimage site where the Austrian composer and organist Anton Bruckner is buried beneath his famous organ. The route continues via Enns, the oldest town in Austria. You cross the Danube again to Mauthausen, and stay overnight in Perg. The famous Bruckner organ festival is held in September - and there are concerts throughout the summer.

Day 5: Perg to Maria Taferl
39 miles
Today you cycle through woodland and orchards towards Grein. You approach it through the 'eye of the needle' a narrow stretch of the valley once feared by sailors. The route takes you past the Habsburg Castle, Persenbeug then onto Marbach, where a transfer to your hotel in the Pilgrimage resort of Maria Taferl is organised.

Day 6: Maria Taferl to Traismauer
35 miles by bicycle and 13 miles by boat
You go through Strudengau to Melk and can visit the famous abbey; then by boat to Spitz and continue by bicycle through the vineyards of the Wachau through the romantic town of Dürnstein and on to Traismauer.

Day 7: Traismauer to Greifenstein
20 miles by bicycle and 11 miles by train to Vienna
Today you cycle via Mautern through a green valley (the vegetable growing area for the whole of Austria) to Greifenstein. You return your bicycles, collect your luggage and continue by rail to your hotel in Vienna.

Day 8: End of tour after breakfast
Time to discover Vienna.
