With 4 nights in Florence and 3 in Siena, this is a great way to discover Tuscany’s most beautiful cities. A walking tour of Florence reveals the legacy of the powerful Medici family, who ruled the city for centuries. In the Galleria dell’Academia is Michelangelo’s David, a remarkable statue of astounding clarity. The Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) over the River Arno is another fantastic sight, with medieval offices and shops built above the water. There’s more breathtaking art in the Uffizi gallery - da Vinci, Canaletto, and Michelangelo again, and a day trip to Pisa will give us the chance to ponder on the famous leaning tower. We move on to Siena via the hilltop town of San Gimignano. Its profile is dominated by the 14 towers - remarkable survivors from a rich history of trade, religion and warfare. Siena itself is centred around a huge square and, on the town hall, the 320ft Torre del Mangia announces the importance of the city’s leaders. As well as its own fascinating churches and museums, Siena is a great base from where we can explore other hilltowns, such as Montepulciano and Pienza, rising above the golden landscape of Tuscany.
