Example itinerary - Competa, Spain Day 1: Arrival day
Day 2: Villages and Vineyards
These introductory walks start and finish from the hotel and explore the area west of Cómpeta. We walk from the hotel via a steeply descending mule track to visit the tiny village of Archez. This tiny village nestles in the valley of the Rio Cajula below Cómpeta and has church tower dating back to the Moorish Occupation in the 7th century. We the head up the valley to visit the larger village Canillas de Albaida with its spectacular views over the deep valleys.
Easier walk: 5 miles (8 km); 850 feet (260 metres) of ascent and descent
Harder walk: 7 miles (11½ km); 1,670 feet (510 metres) of ascent and descent
Day 3: Ridge walks from Sayalonga
We travel to the village of Sayalonga where there is time to admire the Moorish cemetery and to squeeze through the narrowest street in Spain which is only 56 centimetres wide. Our walks from Sayalonga head back to Cómpeta by two different ridges. The easier walk uses the eastern ridge whilst the harder walk takes a westerly route via the village of Corumbela.
Easier walk: 6 miles (10 km); 1,200 feet (370 metres) of ascent and 360 feet (110 metres) of descent.
Harder walk: 7½ miles (12 km); 2,100 feet (640 metres) of ascent and 1,200 feet (370 metres) of descent
Day 4: Into the Sierra Almijara
Just to the north of the village lies the more rugged terrain of the Sierras Almijara and Tejeda which rise to 2,068 metres. These hills are now designated as a nature reserve and provide a contrast to the more agricultural hills between Cómpeta and the coast. The area is rich in fauna including mountain goats, eagles and buzzards. We follow tracks into the hills to the isolated hotel at Casa de la Mina and have the option to continue into the Sierra Almijara to the summit of La Mina.
Easier walk: 5½ miles (9 km); 1,250 feet (380 metres) of ascent and descent
Harder walk: 7½ miles (12km); 1,250 feet (380 metres) of ascent and 2,000 feet (610 metres) of descent
Day 5: Free day
Options for your free day could include taking the bus to malaga to visit the cathedral and impressive new Picasso Museum. A whole day excursion from Cómpeta will take you to Granada, one of Spain's most stunning cities. Located on a hill just above the town is the romantic Alhambra Palace, the fortress home of the Nasrid Sultans, the last Moorish rulers in Spain.
Day 6: Frigiliana
These walks can be combined with a visit to the picturesque village of Frigiliana and the dramatic caves of Nerja. Frigiliana is popular with tourists who come to wander through the narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses, many of which are decorated with colourful hanging baskets. The easier option follows a series of ceramic plaques that lead through the streets telling the stormy history of the village and its occupation by the Moors. Later we make the ascent to the site of the old castle. The harder option starts at the caves and takes us through a wild, mountainous area to Frigiliana. This undulating route crosses the ridge either side of the Chillar and Higuerón Valleys.
Easier walk: Up to 5 miles (8 km); 850 feet (260 metres) of ascent
Harder walk: 7½ miles (11½ km); 2,3600 feet (720 metres) of ascent and 1,840 feet (560 metres) of descent
Day 7: Into the Hidden Valley
These walks head towards the Sierra Almijara to discover a 'hidden valley'. We start from the hermitage of Santa Ana we walk up the valley of the Rio de la Llanada de Turvilla. Here we enter the 'hidden' valley by following a narrow path close to the stream and pass huge caves cut into the limestone. Having enjoyed a leisurely lunch in this quiet spot we could return down the valley or ascend onto the fragrant slopes above.
Easier walk: 5 miles (8km); 1,310 feet (400 metres) of ascent and 1,510 feet (460 metres) of descent.
Harder walk: 8 miles (12½ km); 2,000 feet (610 metres) of ascent and 2,230 feet (680 metres) of descent.
