Choosing the level of your walks

Our easy grading system shows whether a region offer gentle strolls or more challenging routes to help you choose the right holiday for you. Difficulty is measured on many factors such as distance, ascent/descent, terrain, weather and more. There's no magic formula, but from our experience we grade our walks 1 to 5 (where 1 is easy and 5 hard). Our challenger holidays require a high level of fitness and stamina.

West Lulworth House has a wonderful elevated location just 200 yards from the sea. Its elevated location overlooking Lulworth Cove allows spectacular views from many of the rooms, the garden and the outdoor swimming pool. The house has undergone major investment with the completion of a new lounge and dining room

We have 20 newly refurbished bedrooms at West Lulworth House, many with wonderful views down to the sea.

Option 1: Dancing Ledge

Distance: 6 miles (9½km)

Total ascent: 800 feet (240m)

The walk in a nutshell: Walk from the village of Langton Matravers to the coast at Dancing Ledge, a popular spot for rock climbers. From here we head east along the South West Coast Path to the Swanage.

Don’t miss: There's time to explore the traditional seaside resort of Swanage with its beach, pier and steam railway.

Option 2: St Aldhelm's Head

Rugged cliffs of the Purbeck coast

Distance: 9½ miles (15km)

Total ascent: 1,200 feet (400m)

The walk in a nutshell: Walk from the picturesque village of Worth Matravers to the coast at St. Aldhelm’s Head. From here the route follows the South West Coast Path, passing old quarries and Dancing Ledge to reach Swanage.

Don’t miss: With fine coastal walking throughout, there's much to enjoy on this strectch of the Jurassic Coast.

Option 3: Chapman's Pool

Chapman's Pool and Hans Tout cliff

Distance: 12 miles (19km)

Total ascent: 1,800 feet (540m)

The walk in a nutshell: This walk starts further west in the village of Kingston and goes south to join the coast at Houns-tout cliff. Our walk along the coastal path passes Chapman’s Pool with some steep ascents and descents before rounding St Aldhelm’s Head and continuing to Swanage.

Don’t miss: The horseshoe cove at Chapman's Pool; a tranquil haven beneath the towering cliffs.

Option 1: Around Luworth

Lulworth Cove

Distance: 6½ miles (10km)

Total ascent: 1,050 feet (320m)

The walk in a nutshell: Explore the landscapes around Lulworth Cove. We round the famous horseshoe cove and follow the coast into the military ranges, then head inland to West Lulworth, before a circuit of the chalk downs above the village.

Don’t miss: Discover the fascinating geology of Lulworth Cove, and how the sea has created this natural wonder.

Option 2: Tyneham to Lulworth

Distance: 7 miles (11½km)

Total ascent: 1,350 feet (420m)

The walk in a nutshell: Descend from the chalk downs to the remains of the village of Tyneham. Our walk to Lulworth Cove has two steep ascents as we cross the high cliffs of the military ranges.

Don’t miss: The atmospheric deserted village of Tyneham, requisitioned in 1943 to make way for the military training range.

Option 3: Kimmeridge to Lulworth

Coast path through the milittary ranges

Distance: 8½ miles (14km)

Total ascent: 1,700 feet (520m)

The walk in a nutshell: Follow the coastal path from Kimmeridge to Tyneham, then on over the dramatic cliffs of the military ranges back to Lulworth Cove.

Don’t miss: The coastline to the east of Lulworth Cove is particularly impressive. Expect some steep ascents and descents as you follow the undulating coastal path over the chalk cliffs.

Option 1: Corfe Castle to Studland

Total ascent: 1,050 feet (320m)

The walk in a nutshell: Enjoy a stunning variety of inland and coastal scenery. Our walk from Corfe Castle to Studland follows the glorious chalk ridge along the spine of Purbeck peninsula, with the views getting ever more impressive as we near our destination.

Don’t miss: Walking atop the Downs is a real delight with  panoramic views north over Poole Harbour, and south to the English Channel.

Option 2: Chalk Downs & Heath

Distance: 9 miles (14½km)

Total ascent: 1,300 feet (380m)

The walk in a nutshell: Follow the chalk ridge from Corfe Castle heading towards the coast. Towards the end of the walk we cross the beautiful Godlingstone Heath, past the curious Agglestonne Rock, with the final stretch along the beach to Studland.

Don’t miss: Godlingstone Heath is a fascinating scenic contrast, and an excellent place to spot rare butterflies and lizards basking in the sand.

Option 3: Old Harry Rocks

Distance: 11 miles (17½km)

Total ascent: 1,350 feet (420m)

The walk in a nutshell: Cross fields and common land to Corfe Castle then follow the fabulous chalk ridge along the spine of the Purbeck peninsula to Ballard Down and the coast at Old Harry Rocks.

Don’t miss: Soak up the sea views from the famous chalk stacks of Old Harry Rocks, and gaze out towards the corresponding Needles Rocks on the Isle of Wight.

Option 1: Around Cerne Abbas

Total ascent: 800 feet (260m)

The walk in a nutshell: Our circuit takes us through rolling countryside to the hamlet of Minterne Magna, ascends Minterne Hill and returns to the village of Cerne Abbas contouring below the carved giant.

Don’t miss: You'll be struggling to miss the famous Cerne Abbas giant - a 55 metre naked man carved into the chalk hillside above the viillage - don't be prudish! 

Option 2: Buckland Newton circuit

The walk in a nutshell: Explore the glorious Dorset countryside on this undulating circuit over the downs to the village of Buckland Newton, then returning past the famous giant.

Don’t miss: An opportunity to discover the quieter delights of rural Dorset; a scene straight out of a Thomas Hardy novel.

Option 3: The Wessex Ridgeway

Distance: 10½ miles (16½km)

Total ascent: 1,500 feet (460m)

The walk in a nutshell: A circular walk from Cerne Abbas. Follow the Wessex Ridgeway atop the chalk downs, visit Buckland Newton and Minterne Magna and enjoy splendid views of the Cerne and Sydling Valleys. 

Don’t miss: The walk finishes with some of the best views of the Giant.

Option 1: Durdle Door

Distance: 5½ miles (9km)

Total ascent: 1,050 feet (320m)

The walk in a nutshell: Start inland at the hamlet of West Chaldon and head south to the coast path above Ringstead Bay. Our route avoids the steepest sections of the cliff path as we continue to Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove.

Don’t miss: Admire the classic views of Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove as you follow the coastal path past these geological masterpieces.

Option 2: Osmington to Lulworth

Distance: 7 miles (11½km)

Total ascent: 1,300 feet (400m)

The walk in a nutshell: A fabulous walk along the Dorset Coast Path from Osmington to Lulworth Cove. A highlight is the rollercoaster chalk cliffs - expect some steep ups and downs as you follow this dramatic section of coastline towards Durdle Door.

Don’t miss: The tiny church of St Catherine-by-the-Sea. Little bigger than a garden hut it occupies a glorious position atop the cliffs.

Option 3: Weymouth to Lulworth

Distance: 10 miles (16km)

Total ascent: 1,800 feet (540m)

The walk in a nutshell: Follow this superb stretch of the Dorset Coast Path from Weymouth to Lulworth Cove. The cliffs steadily increase in grandeur as we pass Osmington Mills, then on over the rollercoaster cliffs to Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove.

Don’t miss: With fantastic sea views throughout, this is coastal walking at its very best.

Corfe Castle & Swyre Head

Option 1: Swyre Head

Corfe Castle village

Distance: 6½ miles

Total ascent: 650 feet

The walk in a nutshell: Walk from Kingston villlage to the viewpoint of Swyre Head. We then head inland through the village of Church Knowle and along the chalk ridge to Corfe Castle.

Don’t miss: Explore the village of Corfe Castle and its iconic ruined 11th Century namesake. Seek out the quaint pubs and sweet shop, or visit the restored railway.

Option 2: Houns-tout cliff

Chapmans Pool and Houns Tout cliff

Distance: 8 miles

Total ascent: 1,050 feet

The walk in a nutshell: Walk to Swyre Head then descend to the coast and follow the cliff top path to the top of Houns-tout - one of the highest points on the Purbeck coast. We then loop back to Kingston and cross Corfe Common to reach Corfe Castle village.

Don’t miss: Soak up the glorious panorama from Swyre Head where the view streches along the coast towards Weymouth Bay and the Isle of Portland. 

Option 3: Coast path to Kimmeridge

Distance: 11 miles

Total ascent: 1,450 feet

The walk in a nutshell: Admire the views from Swyre Head then descend to the coast and head west towards Kimmeridge. We return to Corfe Castle along the fine chalk ridge that forms the spine of the Purbeck peninsula.

Don’t miss: After a day of fabulous coastal views, enjoy the fine approach along the Ridgeway to Corfe Castle.

Local area

Discover Dorset

Lulworth Cove is a justifiably popular destination, with day-trippers and holiday-makers drawn by the stunning local scenery. The Cove itself is a near-perfect circle which has been carved by the waves into the soft rocks. A 20 minute walk along the cliff path will take you to Durdle Door, the area's other geological wonder. This impressive natural sea arch has been carved from the harder chalk rocks. The free Heritage Centre next to the public car park is well worth a visit during your stay.

Facilities in Lulworth Cove are limited to a selection of pubs, cafés and souvenir shops. The nearest towns are Wareham, Dorchester and Weymouth, which all have a good selection of banks, chemists and supermarkets.

The Tank Museum at Bovington, 20 minutes' drive north of Lulworth Cove, houses a particularly impressive collection of tanks from around the world. Trace the history from the tank's origins in the First World War to the present day. www.tankmuseum.org

 

 

Lulworth Castle
Situated just a couple of miles inland from the cove, Lulworth Castle is a 17th century mock medieval castle that was once the heart of an extensive estate. Having been gutted by fire in 1929 it was derelict for many years, but has since been completely renovated. www.lulworth.com/castle

Corfe Castle
The iconic ruins of Corfe Castle stand guard over a natural gap in the Purbeck Hills, about 30 minutes' drive from Lulworth. Dating from the 11th century it is now maintained by the National Trust. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/corfe-castle

Steam locomotive at Swange StationSwanage Railway
Ride on this lovingly restored branch line through the glorious Purbeck countryside. Steam hauled trains run throughout the year. You may want to leave your car in the Park & Ride at Norden, about 30 minutes' drive from Lulworth, and use the railway to visit the attractive seaside resort of Swanage. www.swanagerailway.co.uk

Located near Wool, 20 minutes' drive north of Lulworth Cove, Monkey World is a great family attraction. Orginally set up to rescue mistreated monkeys from overseas, it is now home to a huge collection of primates of all shapes and sizes. www.monkeyworld.org

 

 

Brownsea Island
Brownsea Island is located in the middle of Poole Harbour – boats depart from Poole Quay and Sandbanks, about 40 minutes' drive from Lulworth Cove. The island is now a nature reserve, managed by the National Trust and one of last remaining places to spot red squirrels in the UK. Brownsea is also famous as the location of the world's first scout camp in 1907. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/brownsea-island

Weymouth
Weymouth is a fine Regency seaside resort with an ever-popular beach and bustling harbour.

Thomas Hardy’s Cottage
The writer Thomas Hardy was one of Dorset’s most celebrated residents who used the local towns and villages around Dorchester as the setting for many of his novels. His birthplace near Dorchester is around 30 minutes' drive away and now owned by the National Trust. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/hardy-country

Located near Dorchester, about 30 minutes' drive away, Athelhampton House is a fine Tudor building dating from 1485. The surrounding formal gardens are also impressive and were built between 1891 - 1899. www.athelhampton.co.uk

This fine country house and estate is located near Wimborne Minster, about 45 minutes' drive from Lulworth Cove. Travel to Lulworth Cove

Due to a change on the Lulworth Estate's parking policy, we recommend getting the train to West Lulworth House. However if you are planning on driving please check the process below

How to get to us by train

By train:

The nearest railway station is at Wool. For train times and general rail enquiries visit www.nationalrail.co.uk or call 03457 484950 (from outside the UK call +44 20 7278 5240).

Get to us by Taxi

By taxi:

The 5 mile journey from Wool railway station takes approximately 10 minutes. Pre-booked taxis cost approx £13 per taxi. Details of our current recommended taxi company and rates will be sent to you with your booking. The return taxi journey can be arranged on your behalf by the West Lulworth House Manager.

Driving to us

By car:

The recommended route is via Bere Regis and Wool – although slightly longer this avoids the traffic through Bournemouth and Poole. From Bere Regis follow signs to Wool. At Wool cross the level crossing and turn left following signs to Lulworth Cove and West Lulworth. Continue for a further 4 miles to Lulworth Cove. As you enter Lulworth Cove Village, there is a slip road on your left to West Lulworth House. Park on the slip road if you would like to take advantage of our bag drop off service, which is available from 10am to 6.30pm, on arrival and departure days. You can then continue to the public car park at the end of the slip road to park your car.

This car park is free for HF Holidays’ guests as long as you leave us your car registration number. You MUST give us this within 30 minutes of arriving, failure to do this could result in a fine from the Lulworth Estate.  

Travel by plane

Travelling from overseas

If you're travelling from Europe the most convenient airport is at Southampton. From Southampton Airport Parkway station (adjacent to the airport terminal) there are direct trains every hour to Wool - journey time 1hr 20mins. See www.nationalrail.co.uk for details.

For most guests, travelling to either London Heathrow or London Gatwick airport is the best option. See www.nationalrail.co.uk for onward connections by train to Wool.
