20th Century Music

For many people the very words ‘20^th century music’ are enough to put them off going to a concert. But this period of musical history is far more varied than first meets the eye: much of it is very tuneful and inspired by traditional folk music.

The 20^th century also has a mind-boggling number of ‘isms’: Impressionism, Symbolism, Futurism, Dadaism, Cubism, Expressionism, Neo-Classicism, Serialism, Mimimalism, as well as aleatoric and indeterminate music!

During the holiday we will have an opportunity to listen to representative works from each of these categories with music from a diverse range of composers: Debussy, Satie, Stravinsky, Berg, Bartok, Prokofiev, Villa-Lobos, Boulez, Reich and others. A real opportunity to broaden your horizons!
