Situated on a bay recently judged as one of the top ten most beautiful in Turkey, Torba is a little village stretched alongside the beach with a small marina at one end which still used by local fishermen.
Bodrum
Many will be inspired by the brief visit at the end of day 3 walks to revisit this charming historical city. Amongst the historical sites worth a visit are the 15th century castle built by the Knights of St John, and the Mausoleum, although little of this now remains as much of the stone was used in construction of the castle. A day trip is possible to the island of Kos, or shorter boat trips to visit the Black Island or cruise along the shore of the peninsula are possible, but all these need some advance planning. Alternatively you may prefer to explore the harbourside, wander through the busy streets or just relax and enjoy lunch in one of the many restaurants.
Boat trip
It is possible to join a cruise around the coast of the peninsula visiting some of the secluded bays and islands. There will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy a swim and lunch is served on board. Trips need to be booked in advance and depart from the jetty at Torba or from Bodrum harbour.
Gümüslük
Well worth a visit is the peaceful village of Gümüslük, one of the oldest settlements on the Bodrum Peninsula. It stands on the site of the ancient Carian city of Myndus whose seafront sections slid into the sea in some long-forgotten earthquake. Today these remains are a magnet for those who enjoy snorkelling. In 2006 archaeologists started excavating the land, and so far they have uncovered further walls and mosaic beneath the sea and on Rabbit Island, which separates the two well-sheltered bays of Gümüslük and is accessible by a partially sunken causeway.
Today Gümüslük (Gümüs is the Turkish word for Silver) retains a small-scale, relaxed and magical atmosphere thanks to strictly enforced building prohibitions, designed to protect the ancient site.
It’s not clear why Gümüslük is called as it is. Some locals say it’s due to the history of Myndus when the city used to be powerful enough to mine and mint its own silver coins. It’s also been said that it's due to the common sight of ‘yakamoz’ (reflection of the moon on the water) turning the water in the bay a beautiful silver. The charming flower-bedecked houses follow the curve of a small and pretty bay - it’s a great place to unwind in an idyllic setting and perhaps enjoy a fish lunch in one of the waterfront restaurants.
Shops & facilities: There is a minimarket and a souvenir shop at the end of the village closest to the hotel. There is a bank with an external ATM and a supermarket opposite the hotel (these may not be open in April). There are also a couple of seaside bars in Torba, and the beach makes for a pleasant short evening stroll.
