The guided walks will be chosen from the following itinerary:
To familiarise you with the Dartmoor terrain, we take a circular walk visiting the higher granite tors and valleys. Includes local highlights such as the granite tramway, Widecombe in the Moor, Jay’s Grave and Houndtor Medieval Village.
Distance 12½ miles with 2,025 feet of ascent.
We start by ascending the very prominent Cosdon Beacon, with its stunning views towards Exmoor. Passing an ancient boundary stone and stone circle, we ascend again to the aptly-named Wild Tor and onwards to Hangingstone Hill, the highest point of the walk. Using a peat pass, we go across open moor to Sittaford Tor, then head off to the ruin of Statts House and the East Dart River. Conditions permitting, we cross at the waterfall and walk into Postbridge, visiting a Bronze Age burial chamber en route.
Distance 13¾ miles with 1,825 feet of ascent.
We will start at Postbridge, walking south to ancient Dunabridge Pound via Bellever Tor. Footpaths and stepping stones take us to the River Swincombe before we head out on open moor to Ryders Hill, the highest point on the South Moor. Our descent takes us north of the Avon Reservoir. We then descend steeply and walk upwards through the villages of Scorriton and Holne before the final descent to Newbridge.
Distance 14½ miles with 1,460 feet of ascent.
