Elgar did not complete his First Symphony (1908) until he was past 50, but its huge success encouraged the establishment and growth of one of the most important developments in 20th century music: the English symphony. We'll explore this rich and varied legacy of masterworks, including the First Symphony of Elgar, and the works of Vaughan Williams, Walton, Bax, Rubbra, Arnold and Britten.
