High Routes on the Isle of Arran

Holiday reference: ARMHL

Print local area information

The Isle of Arran is one of the most accessible of all the Scottish Islands. Its unique geology has led it to be dubbed ‘Scotland in Miniature’. The south resembles the Scottish lowlands with rolling forested hills and heather moorland. However, the island’s true grandeur can be found in the towering mountains to the north. Impressive granite peaks and grand glacial valleys offer a wealth of different walks to suit every type of walker.

An added attraction of Arran is its stunning variety of wildlife. From the dolphins and seals that swim off the island’s beaches, to red deer and eagles, you don’t have to go far to be absorbed into Arran’s breathtaking natural beauty.

A short stroll along the coast will take you to the village of Lamlash. Facilities here are fairly limited, but you will find a handful of craft shops, pubs and a post office. Ferries also depart from Lamlash for Holy Isle.

A wider range of facilities including supermarkets, cafes and gift shops in Brodick, the island’s main settlement.

During your stay on the Isle of Arran you may enjoy visiting the following places of interest:

Brodick Castle

Managed by the National Trust for Scotland, Brodick Castle is a fine stately home surrounded by a famous country park and rhododendron gardens.

Lochranza Distillery

See how one of Arran’s most famous exports is produced.

Arran Adventure Company

Offering a wide range of adventurous activities including watersports, climbing and mountain biking. Located just 5 minutes walk from Altachorvie.

Holy Isle

Take the short ferry crossing from Lamlash to Holy Isle to discover this unspoilt haven and Buddhist retreat.

Lamlash Golf Club

Arran is a great destination for golfers and has seven courses. The nearest, and one of the best courses, is less than a mile from Altachorvie.
