The Isle of Arran is one of the most accessible of all the Scottish Islands. Its unique geology has led it to be dubbed ‘Scotland in Miniature’. The south resembles the Scottish lowlands with rolling forested hills and heather moorland. However, the island’s true grandeur can be found in the towering mountains to the north. Impressive granite peaks and grand glacial valleys offer a wealth of different walks to suit every type of walker.
An added attraction of Arran is its stunning variety of wildlife. From the dolphins and seals that swim off the island’s beaches, to red deer and eagles, you don’t have to go far to be absorbed into Arran’s breathtaking natural beauty.
The whole of Arran is within easy reach from Altachorvie. A short stroll along the coast will take you to the village of Lamlash with its old pier and other interesting buildings. In this attractive seaside village you will find a handful of craft shops, tea shops, pubs and a post office. The small passenger ferry also departs from Lamlash for Holy Isle.
A wider range of facilities including supermarkets, cafes, restaurants and gift shops are to be found in Brodick, the island’s main settlement.
During your stay on the Isle of Arran you may enjoy visiting the following places of interest:
Managed by the National Trust for Scotland, Brodick Castle is a fine historic stately home, surrounded by a famous country park and rhododendron gardens.
In a wonderful location at the north end of the island, with a very good visitor centre and café, you can see how one of Arran’s most famous exports is produced.
Offering a wide range of exciting outdoor activities including watersports, climbing and mountain biking, the Arran Adventure Company is located just 5 minutes walk from Brodick.
Take the short ferry crossing from Lamlash to Holy Isle to discover this unspoilt haven which also serves as a Buddhist retreat.
Arran is a great destination for golfers and has seven courses - three 18-hole, three 9-hole and one 12-hole at Shiskine. The nearest, Lamlash Golf Course, is one of the most challenging on the island. It is less than a mile from Altachorvie.
There is an Arran Golf Pass available, allowing one round on all seven courses on the island for an attractive price (currently £100).
There is an indoor swimming pool and spa at Auchrannie, which is a hotel, spa and restaurant complex one mile outside Brodick. Massage and beauty treatment can also be arranged there.
Bikes and helmets will be delivered to the hotel if ordered the day before.
Arran is a magnet for artistic people and there are many outlets where their talents can be viewed and bought.
Housed in a traditional farm cottage on the outskirts of Brodick, this makes an interesting visit and there is an attractive tea-room.
