Dovedale

Red, white and blue logo with four starsNewton House lies at the heart of the Derbyshire Dales, surrounded by rolling green fields. This 18th century former coaching inn has excellent walks from the doorstep, and is an excellent base for a walking or leisure activity holiday. 

 

Newton House has 28 bedrooms located either in the main building or in the tastefully converted stable rooms across the courtyard.

Value rooms                                      

A limited number of value rooms are available at a discount of £8 per person per night. Our value rooms have the same facilities as our standard rooms, but don’t have an en-suite bathroom.

Single rooms

Standard single rooms are available for an extra £8 per night. 

Family rooms                                   

If you are travelling with your family, we have a selection of 3 and 4-bedded rooms.

All family rooms have:

  • Full-sized twin or double beds for adults
  • Bunk beds or occasional beds for children
  • En-suite bathroom with WC and shower or bath
  • Tea and coffee making facilities

All our Country Houses are tailored to walkers and outdoor enthusiasts and have excellent boot and drying rooms, laundry facilities and a mini-shop for essentials such as maps, postcards and toiletries.

The main lounge and bar provide comfortable spaces for relaxation after your walks or activities.

The dining room is adjacent to the ballroom which is a flexible space for dancing or a variety of leisure activity holidays.

The upstairs Tissington Lounge can be used for small groups or as a games room with table tennis, and there is also a small downstairs lounge for reading.

Free internet access offered on a dedicated PC and Wifi is available in some public rooms.  There is also a range of board games and books.

Newton House has attractive gardens with a croquet lawn and badminton. From the back of the property there is direct access onto the Tissington Trail, an old railway line that is now a traffic-free route for walkers and cyclists.

Newton House is mostly accessible to wheelchair users and has accommodation available on ground floor. 

Arrival & car parking facilities

  • Free parking available
  • There are two disabled parking spaces at the front of the property with a gravel drive to the side leading to a large gravel car park at the rear
  • The surface of the car park (slightly sloping) is gravel and the footpath leading to the house is a mixture of gravel and stone slabs 

Main entrance & reception

  • Access at either entrance is at ground level with no steps and a minimum door width of 82cm 

Public areas - hall, stairs, landing, corridors etc

  • The corridor is carpeted and well lit, the decor has a good colour contrast
  • The minimum width of the corridor is 82cm 

Public areas - sitting room, lounges, lobbies etc

  • On the ground floor, there is a conservatory (tiled floor) with double doors opening to the main lounge (carpeted), a bar, a dining room and a ballroom
  • There are 2 steps up to the dining room and the ballroom, but a portable ramp is available on request
  • In the lounge the furniture is movable, comfortable cushioned chairs and sofas
  • On the first floor is Tissington Lounge, which can be accessed either via a staircase from the car park (12 steps with a handrail) or through the house up a staircase of 14 steps, then along a corridor with 2 steps up (with rail) and 3 steps down (no rail) 

Public WCs

  • Public toilets on the ground floor. Door width 75cm, not accessible for wheelchair users
  • One cubicle in each toilet. Tiled floor, cubicle door width 73cm and toilet height 40cm 

Restaurant / dining room, bar & bar area

  • Dining room and bar are on the ground floor. The bar is 110cm in height
  • There are two steps to access the dining room, a portable ramp is available on request
  • In the dining room, there are 6 round tables (seating up to 8 guests) with the underspace of 68cm, seat height 48cm. The dining room is carpeted
  • Breakfast service is a self-service buffet. Dinner with waitress service 

Bedrooms

The rooms are a mixture of singles, twins ard doubles. Most are en-suite, some share facilities.  All rooms are carpeted 

Grounds and gardens

  • Mature gardens, which are easily accessible by a wheelchair
  • The pathways are gravel, slab and concrete
  • The garden is level, except for a slight incline to the overspill car park 

Additional information

  • Fire procedure is displayed in each room and explained to guests on arrival. Guests requiring assistance at an evacuation are identified at this time and door hanger cards are issued
  • Mobile phone reception is generally good from the main building
  • Assistance dogs can be provided for
  • Information can be provided in large print
  • Staff have received disability awareness training
  • Special diets can be catered for. Specialist food can be obtained with prior notice
  • Hired equipment can be arranged for your stay with prior notice
  • Fridge for medication can be supplied

Dinner                 

The relaxed dinner is a highlight of any stay at our Country Houses - with tables seating up to 10 and no seating plan, it offers a great opportunity to get to know fellow guests.  There is always a choice of dishes for every course, featuring good British cooking and often local specialities. Vegetarian meals are always available.

Guided Walking

The guest lounge at Newton HouseEnjoy a glass of wine or local beer in the bar before hearing about the next day's walks.  After dinner there will be an activity or entertainment which you will be welcome to join.  These vary from week to week but could include a ‘darts and dominos’ competition night, an illustrated talk about the River Dove and local area, quizzes or a board games night; alternatively relax in our lounges or bar.

Leisure Activities

Many of our Leisure Activities holidays continue into the evening with programmed sessions.  Other holidays will have the evenings free, and you will be welcome to join in other social activities that may be happening in the house.

Family holidays

On our Cycling & Walking for Families the evening activities will be geared towards children of all ages. 

Freedom Breaks

Guests on Freedom Breaks which are scheduled alongside Guided Walking holidays are entirely welcome to join in the organised evening activities.  Please note, not all Freedom Breaks will be with these holidays – if the evening activities are important to you, please check before booking.

Guided trails

Depending on your travel dates, there may be activities on offer in the house in the evening which you are welcome to take part in.
