British nationals require a full valid passport with six months validity from the date of entry, with at least one blank page. Other passport holders please check with your nearest Kenyan embassy or consulate for entry requirements.
British passport holders need a visa to enter Kenya, which is currently £30 for a single entry visa valid for six months, and is obtained from the Kenya High Commission. Nationals from most other countries also require the same visa; please check with your nearest Kenyan consulate or embassy.
Before booking, you should check with your doctor to see if any health precautions are needed. The following websites provide a wealth of information on travelling and health:
Vaccines
Your doctor may offer you vaccination against hepatitis A and B, typhoid, yellow fever and a one-time polio booster if you haven't previously received one for travel. Routine immunisations, such as those that prevent teanus/diphtheria or "childhood" diseases, should be reviewed and updated as needed.
Malaria
Risk exists throughout the year in most parts of Kenya. Mosquitoes carrying malaria tend to strike mainly in the evenings. It is wise to wear clothing which covers your arms, legs and feet at this time of the day, as well as wearing insect repellent. Consult your doctor or pharmacist as to the most appropriate form of malaria prophylaxis for the areas you are travelling to.
Kenya has a favourable climate, being sunny, only moderately wet, and not too hot. The climate is subtropical and despite the proximity to the Equator, temperatures are never too high due to the altitude. Daytime temperatures are generally in the mid 20s°C / mid 70s°F, dropping cooler in the evenings and these are quite constant year-round. There is a double rainy season between mid March to May and November to December.
The Kenyan Shilling is the official currency. Sterling can best be exchanged at the airport, as the queuing in the local banks can be a long procedure. Rates of exchange may be better if you obtain currency from your bank prior to departing for Kenya. Money can be withdrawn from ATMs although these are not available everywhere. The hotels accept payments by credit cards.
Tipping is not compulsory, but is a means of recognising good service in most countries. Previously we have included tipping in the price of our holidays, but guest feedback has shown that guests would prefer this to be at their own discretion – to give more, or less, as a reflection of the service.
As guidance, we would recommend you allow £30 per person for tips on this holiday to cover local staff and services.
