Lesvos, known as the “Garden of the Aegean” to the Ottomans, is refreshingly free of the trappings of major tourism. One of the best kept secrets of the Mediterranean, the island is blessed with traditional hill top villages, bountiful olive groves, pine forests, medieval castles and monasteries, scenic harbours and some of the friendliest people in all of Greece.
The beautifully preserved town clings to the hillside and its pretty harbour and cobbled lanes of tiered stone houses are all protected by law. Overlooking Mólyvos and affording splendid views of the Turkish coast, stands the Byzantine castle, built by the Genoese in 1373.
Today Mólyvos makes a delightful place to stroll underneath bougainvillea-covered streets with many small souvenir shops and bars to discover. The area around the harbour is very pretty and it is worth spending some time there.
Shops & facilities: There are several ATMs, a tourist office, many mini-markets and several small tobacconist/bookshops where you can purchase phone cards, maps and local information books. The majority of shops are gift/craft/souvenir shops. There is a medical centre, pharmacy and a number of small art galleries.
Donkey trek – If you would like a different view of the locality, then why not try a donkey trek? Trips are organised daily from Michaelis Donkey Station, which is a 10 minute walk from the hotel.
Car hire – A great way to explore more of the island independently. You need to remember to bring your driving licence. The cost is approximately £50 for a 4/5 seater car for the day.
Mytiline – By car, a visit to the capital of the island, Mytiline, is possible. Art lovers could visit the bustling town centre in the morning and in the afternoon drive on to the village of Varia, 4 miles south of Mytiline, to visit the Teriade Museum, which houses a collection of modern art including works by Picasso, Chagall, Miró, Le Corbusier and Matisse
