Easier Walks
Harder Walks
Walks are sometimes on rocky paths.
Day 1: Arrival day
For those arriving on the flights to Mahon airport, the short onward journey to the hotel is by coach. Depending on your arrival time you may have the opportunity to see a little of the resort before the evening meal. On the first evening your leaders will explain more about the walks and there will be plenty of time to meet with your fellow guests.
Day 2: Along the east coast to Es Grau
Today we’ll travel to the north of Mahon to enjoy walks along the island’s east coast. There are views over the coastal village of Es Grau and beyond to the island of Colom. We’ll pass delightful beaches and visit the prehistoric monument of Torre Blanca. Our journey takes us to the protected nature reserve which overlooks the S’Albufera lake before reaching the village of Es Grau.
Easier Walk: 5¾ miles with up to 600 feet of ascent and descent
Harder Walk: 6¾ miles with up to 1,100 feet of ascent and descent
Day 3: Coastal defences to Punta Prima
From our hotel the scale of Mahon’s grand harbour is apparent. Over the centuries this prime anchorage acquired an important strategic role for Menorca’s rulers and, as a result, a series of impressive fortifications have been built around the harbour mouth. Our walks explore this rich military history before continuing along the southeastern coast to the resort of Punta Prima.
Easier Walk: 5½ miles with up to 400 feet of ascent and descent
Harder Walk: 7¾ miles with up to 500 feet of ascent and 600 feet of descent
Day 4: Cuitadella
Situated at the western end of the island, Cuitadella is the second largest town on Menorca. Originally settled by the Moors, this was formally the island’s capital until this was switched to Mahon by the British. Cuitadella can be reached by bus; a journey of about an hour in each direction. The historic centre is clustered around its narrow harbour and contains a maze of narrow alleys and Moorish buildings. On the return we visit Monte Toro, the highest point of Menorca, for panoramic views.
Day 5: Free day
On one day per week, usually the Tuesday, no walks are organised, allowing you to explore the local area on your own or just relax around the hotel. Alternatively you may prefer to explore the island independently.
Day 6: Limestone valley and sandy beaches
Prehistoric ruins can be seen on the first section of our walk which then descends gradually to the sea through an area of limestone scenery. The most notable feature on this part of the walk is the enormous Cova d'es Coloms (Cave of the Pigeons). Said to be large enough to accommodate a cathedral, it is certainly an impressive sight. Local legend states that if a married couple enter the cave together they will be separated and if they enter it separately they will remain together. We start from the modern resort of Sant Thomas, one of the most popular resorts on the island, and walk onwards along the coastline southeast to the neighbouring resort of Son Bou. We walk either on the beach, or the grassy dunes behind, with the wetland area of Sant Jaume just slightly inland. Son Bou is another modern resort; however its basilica, dating from the 5th century is well worth a visit.
Easier Walk: 5¾ miles with up to 130 feet of ascent and 560 feet of descent
Harder Walk: 9½ miles with up to 560 feet of ascent and descent
Day 7: Cliffs and coves of the southwest coast
Our final walks head to the southwest corner of Menorca for some particularly attractive coastal walks. We start in the charming resort of Cala Galdana, which has a beautiful sandy beach surrounded by pine-clad headlands. We stroll along to our viewpoint overlooking the beach at the Cala Macarella.
Easier Walk: 5½ miles with up to 430 feet of ascent and 590 feet of descent
Harder Walk: 9½ miles with up to 660 feet of ascent and descent
Please note that the itinerary outlined is provisional and could be subject to change. A finalised itinerary will be available at the resort and your leaders will talk to you every evening about the next day’s walks.
On some days the walks start and finish at the hotel. On other days we’ll use the hired transport to explore the surrounding area. The cost of transport to and from the walk is payable locally; please allow €50.
