Robin Hood’s Bay and Whitby

We visit the quaint smugglers’ village of Robin Hood’s Bay, exploring the alleyways down to the sea. A short journey towards Whitby and our walk will take us along the cliffs to Whitby Abbey from where we descend the 199 steps into Whitby Old Town to explore the town and harbour.

3½ miles and 400 feet of ascent

Goathland and Pickering

Goathland is an ancient settlement on the North York Moors, famous for its associations with the steam railway and the TV series “Heartbeat”.  Our walk follows the route of an old railway, passing the village of Beckhole. Continuing above the river we soon reach Grosmont, joining the train which takes us to Pickering.

3½ miles with gentle descent of 330 feet

Castle Howard and its Environs

Castle Howard is Yorkshire’s largest house, the home of the Howard family.  It has extensive grounds and gardens with attractive monuments and several lakes.  We begin our walk at Coneysthorpe taking us close to the great lake and around the environs of Castle Howard.  Plenty of time will be allowed to spend in the house and gardens.

2½ miles with minimal gentle undulations

Rosedale, Lastingham and Hutton-le-Hole

From Bank Top, overlooking Rosedale, we walk south along a moorland track via Ana Cross to Lastingham, the site of a monastery built in 654AD and destroyed by the Danes.  Another was built in 1078 and St Cedd’s tomb lies in the unique crypt, the only one in England with a nave, chancel and two side aisles.  We walk on to Hutton-le-Hole, an attractive moorland village which has the Ryedale Folk Museum of Rural Life.

5 miles with 200 feet of ascent

Runswick Bay, Staithes and the Danby Visitor Centre

Explore the village of Runswick Bay and the beach before walking on the Cleveland Way along the cliff top to Staithes.  There will be time to look at the harbour and visit the Captain Cook Visitor Centre.  Then on to the North York Moors Visitor Centre at Danby where there are exhibitions, a shop and a café.  There will be the option of a short walk from the Visitor Centre.

4 miles with ascents and descents to and from the sea at Runswick Bay and Staithes
