Easier Walks
Harder Walks
Walks occasionally steep in sections to the hill-top villages.
Day 1: Arrival day
For those arriving on the Turin flights, the onward journey to Montelupo is by coach. You should arrive at the hotel with time to settle into your room, and perhaps explore the village. On the first evening your Leaders will explain more about the walks and there will be plenty of time to meet with your fellow guests.
Day 2: Montelupo’s Wolf’s Trail
These introductory walks will explore the area close to the hotel and include a visit to Montelupo village. The walks then follow the ‘Wolf’s Trail’ a circular path, waymarked with an outline of a wolf’s head.
Easier Walk: 4¾ miles with up to 750 feet of ascent and descent
Harder Walk: 6½ miles with up to 1,280 feet of ascent and descent
Day 3: Along the Tanero River
The day starts at the attractive medieval town of Alba. This is the largest town in the region and now has a strong reputation as a gastronomic centre and is famous for its wines and chocolate. Our walks follow the Tanero River, which at 175 miles long is one of the main tributaries of the River Po.
Easier Walk: 5½ miles with up to 670 feet of ascent and 360 feet of descent
Harder Walk: 9½ miles with up to 1,400 feet of ascent and 890 feet of descent
Day 4: Bormida Valley
The Bormida River flows through the heart of the Langhe Hills and our walks today follow the wooded ridge on its western side that separates the main valley from that of the River Uzzone. Walks end in the small town of Cortemilia, one of the most attractive in the area. The river divides the town into two villages: San Michele on the west bank and San Pantaleo on the east. The 12th century church is well worth a visit, being one of the most interesting examples in the Langhe.
Easier Walk: 4 miles with up to 250 feet of ascent and 1,150 feet of descent
Harder Walk: 9 miles with up to 600 feet of ascent and 1,800 feet of descent
Day 5: Free day
Each week there is a free day where no guided walks are offered. This is an ideal opportunity to relax around the hotel, walk independently, or visit local places of interest.
If you would like to stay close to Montelupo you may like to head to the village of Rodello (short walk) or Diano d’Alba (short bus journey). The small attractive villages have a restaurant/bar and some other limited shopping facilities.
A little further afield, Alba is an attractive town with a medieval centre. It offers excellent shopping and a wide selection of restaurants. Travel to the city would be via the public bus service or taxi
The hotel has an arrangement with the Alba Tennis Club, approximately 7km from the hotel an reached by taxi. The club has clay and synthetic grass courts, a 25metre swimming pool and restaurant. This facility is available, on a daily fee basis, for guests’ use by arrangement with Reception.
If there is sufficient interest your Leaders may offer an excursion to Turin. This city, because of its recent hosting of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games, has undergone a major transformation. This has involved the creation new facilities and the restoration of its old historic buildings.
Day 6: The Barolo vineyards and villages
Today we head to the west of Montelupo to walk in the Barolo vineyards, the most famous in the area. The Barolo wine is very well regarded and renowned for its rich flavour and aroma. It is produced in the Langhe Hills, centred around the large village of Barolo, usually from the Nebbiolo grape. This ripens quite late, towards the end of October, with bunches that have an intense blue colour. These walks offer opportunities to sample and buy the local produce.
Easier Walk: 5½ miles with up to 970 feet of ascent and descent
Harder Walk: 9½ miles with up to 1,015 feet of ascent and 1,400 feet of descent
Day 7: Above the Tanaro Valley
Our final walks of the week follow the ridge of hills above the Tanaro Valley. We start with a journey south to either Bossolasco or Serravalle dell Langhe with the walks heading back to the hotel in Montelupo.
Easier Walk: 6 miles with up to 525 feet of ascent and 1,000 feet of descent
Harder Walk: 9½ miles with up to 1,215 feet of ascent and 1,690 feet of descent
Day 8: Departure day
Please note that the itinerary outlined is provisional and could be subject to change. A finalised itinerary will be available at the resort and your leader will brief you every evening about next day's walks.
