The romantic period in music spans most of the nineteenth century (1828-1900) and includes a whole range of composers: Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Verdi and Wagner to name but a few. But what exactly makes their music romantic as opposed to classical? During this holiday we will have an opportunity to explore this question and to discover what inspired much of the romantic repertoire (be it literature, painting or natural scenery) through listening to a range of different works: songs, opera, piano music, overtures and symphonies.
