Gardens of the western Scottish Highlands are renowned for their early spring colour, with rhododendrons and other Asian species flowering at their best. The gardens we visit on this programme are mostly quiet and uncommercialised.
Holiday highlights:
- The glen garden of Crarae, created by the Campbell family but now owned by the National Trust for Scotland, has wonderful shrub collections of not just rhododendrons and a wide range of choice species offering superb spring, summer and autumn colour throughout
- Crossing over the ‘Bridge over the Atlantic’ we visit the garden at An Cala on the Isle of Seil, where the current owner has created a pleasing harmony of crag, walls of local Easdale slate, wide terrace lawns, attractive herbaceous borders and winding paths and streams
- Ardmaddy Castle in its unique setting, with the fortified house built on a rise overlooking the sea shore of Seil Sound on one side, and in the other direction its formal walled garden
- Set on a hillside with magnificent views overlooking the head of Loch Fyne, the woodland garden of Ardkinglas contains one of the finest collections of conifers in the British Isles
- Arduaine garden, owned by the National Trust for Scotland and in a delightful sheltered setting at the back of Asknish Bay. Here we see spring colour of rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias and other Asiatic trees and shrubs
