Preparation for assessment
For the best possible chance of success you need to come to the assessment adequately prepared. If you want to brush up on your navigating skills or gain an insight into leading groups and find out a bit more about leading for HF Holidays, why not come on one of our courses for Prospective Leaders? There are three to choose from, details below.
The courses start with dinner on day of arrival and finish late afternoon on the final day (day three on two night courses and day four on three night courses). The price includes two nights' dinner, bed and breakfast (sharing a twin room) and two packed lunches for two-night courses and three nights' dinner, bed and breakfast (sharing a twin room) and three packed lunches for three-night courses. On some courses there is an option to stay an extra night (see individual course dates).

Navigation Courses
optional pre-assessment courses
On each course, experienced HF Holidays' leaders and assessors will share some of their insights into the world of navigating whilst leading a walk, as well as discussing the role of HF Holidays' walk leaders. They'll take you on a step by step guide to the skills you'll need, and help you develop your own skills in practical exercises.

Refresher Navigation - Levels 1 & 2
This two-day course is designed for those who usually walk in lowland countryside such as farmland or coastal areas, or in moorland areas. We will introduce some of the basic concepts needed to get from A to B effectively and show you how to divert to C, D and E. If you are a novice navigator it is anticipated that you will need to spend a reasonable amount of time consolidating your skills after attending this course before you come for assessment.

Refresher Navigation - Levels 2 & 3
This course is designed for mountain and moorland walkers whose technical skills have become rusty! Our two day course will cover the basics of navigation as well as more advanced techniques and perhaps introduce you to some new concepts and ideas. You should allow yourself sufficient time to practise your skills between attending this course and being assessed.

Leadership & Navigation Course
Leadership & Navigation - Levels 2 & 3
In addition to two days of navigation, as described in 'Refresher Navigation - Levels 2 & 3', - this course includes a day of party management training. Different styles and techniques for party management will be covered and situations you may be faced with when leading a walk will be discussed.
