Navigation
- Attend one of our Refresher Navigation courses, designed to brush up your navigation skills.
- Join a local navigation course. Many colleges run navigation evening classes.
- Read a book on navigation. We can recommend a couple of publications; see our special offers.
- Practise navigating off the beaten track.

Leadership Training
- Attend one of our Leadership & Navigation courses designed to introduce you to different styles and techniques of party management as well as brush up on your navigation skills.

Walking Experience
- Join a local walking group. If you reconnoitre walks, or lead them, these can be recorded as personal experience.
- Have a plan of walks you intend to do during a set period of time - and stick to it even if it's raining!

Weather Knowledge
- For a basic knowledge have a look through the weather books in your local library or see our special offers.
- Get to grips with synoptic charts - you'll see them on TV weather reports and in newspapers.

Emergencies & First Aid
- Hillwalking, the official handbook of the Mountain Leader and Walking Group Leader schemes, has a good section on incident management.
- Read an up-to-date First Aid hand book; the Red Cross produces a useful book.
- Consider attending a 16 hour HSE approved First Aid course (although this is not necessary before your Guidelines assessment).
