Home to over a million people, Marrakesh is a thriving modern city with an astounding and historic core. The Old Town - the Medina - is a world apart from the wide French-style boulevards of the Nouvelle Ville. Here are the souks, the largest in Morocco, an intimate network of market stalls, courtyards, alleys and mosques, all overseen by the mighty Koutouba minaret. It’s an intoxicatingly exotic place to hunt for souvenirs. Here too, is the fascinating Marrakesh Museum, housed in a sumptuous palace, and the exquisite Ben Yousseff Medersa, for many centuries a centre of Islamic learning, but now a showpiece of the city’s architectural heritage. The vast Place Djemaa el Fna is the largest market square in Africa. Loiter here and you’ll be entertained by musicians and jugglers, acrobats and snake-charmers. Another place to wander is the Majorelle Garden, the ambitious creation of a French colonialist and now also home to the Museum of Islamic Art. No trip to this city would be complete without exploring the Kasbah, the walled citadel with its elaborate tombs and the impressive ruins of the El Badi Palace, said to be modelled on the Alhambra in Spain.
