Mallorca's celebrating 100 years of tourism	26 August 05

This year the Mallorca Tourist Board is celebrating its centenary year with a major focus on past, present and future.

Mallorca remains the biggest single destination for UK holidaymakers with about 2.3 million visitors last year, although the type of holiday offered has changed greatly in recent years. Mallorca started off as a package holiday destination, there is an exhibition opening on 20 August at La Lonja in the old town of Palma which will tell you all about the history of how it become the first major package tourism island.

However, Mallorca is now seeing an decline in this area, an increase in low cost flights and has developed itself as a year round destination by focusing on rural, cultural and sport tourism.

The most popular sports on the island are walking and cycling, allowing you the opportunity to discover some of the best walking in Spain. With HF Holidays you can enjoy guided walks into the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana, which plunge dramatically down to the blue waters of the Mediterranean. Coastal paths lead to the traditional Mallorcan villages of Deia and Valldemossa. At the end of this season, we'll say farewell to Castlebeigh House in Pitlochry in the Eastern Highlands, so if you haven't bagged the munros of Ben Vrackie, Creag Meagaidh or Schiehallion book your autumn break now.
