Steven Purdham, our Trails Product Manager, went to Mallorca to gain some first-hand experience of the Tramuntana Trail.
“Forget everything you thought you knew about Mallorca, I have! Many of you will have visited the island, which is ever-popular with tourists, searching for the warmth of the Balearic climate and its spectacular beaches. This is only a small part of what the island has to offer.
On joining the group in Palma, I soon found that a short transfer through the mountains (via the impressive Sóller Tunnel) takes you to a very different kind of Mallorca. Think traditional Mallorcan villages, beautiful mountain scenery and pretty coves.
I travelled to the northwest of the island, which is tucked away from the busier resorts and is home to the striking Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. HF Holidays’ Tramuntana Trail is based in Puerto de Sóller and follows the increasingly popular GR221 Dry Stone Way (or Ruta de Pedra en Sec) long-distance path. Over the course of one week we covered over 50 miles from Valldemossa eastwards to historic Pollença on a week of continuous walking in truly stunning surroundings.
The scenery along the route is constantly changing and had me reaching for the camera at every turn. Walking here varies from ascending rocky mountain paths and around secluded coves high above the turquoise Mediterranean, to paths alongside olive, lemon and orange groves. The trail is also dotted with beautiful villages and towns.
In short, this long-distance trail offers a fulfilling challenge, and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone wanting to explore this spectacular island.”
