A recent article by the Italian newspaper, La Repubblica, reported that more bicycles were sold than cars in Italy in 2011.
The report stated that over 1.75million bicycles were sold in 2011, just beating the car sales figures. The increase in sales has been linked to financial stresses in the country and with the rising cost of petrol making the bike an affordable means of transport. With cycling coming back into fashion there’s also a drive in the country to improve its cycling infrastructure and make many of the inner city roads more cyclist friendly.
The country has always been known for its brilliant cycling holidays and this new surge in interest is bound to further enhance the great cycling on offer in Italy.
