Perhaps not what you would expect on one of our activity holidays, but there’s a fascinating insight into 18th century sports at the National Trust’s Wordsworth House at Cockermouth in the Lake District.
The event, which runs every weekend until 19 August, showcases a wide variety of sports popular in Georgian times – from Cumbrian wrestling to pinching matches. There are interactive displays and even opportunities to try out some of the sports.
This could make an interesting day out while staying at our Country Houses at Derwentwater and Conistonwater.
For those more interested in literature, Wordsworth House was the childhood home of the poet, William Wordsworth. There are many other places of interest in the Lake District associated with Wordsworth – his adult homes at Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount, and his school at Hawkshead. Some of these are visited on our Wordsworth’s Literary Lakeland holiday which will be part of our 2013 leisure activity holidays programme. Look out for the 2013 brochure to be published in early September.
