Rome
Once the heart of a mighty empire and still the centre of the Catholic world, Rome offers an unrivalled wealth of historical sights. Whether you are drawn by the fascinating ancient monuments or the excitement of one of Europe's most cosmopolitan capitals, a visit to the Eternal City will be a memorable experience.
The compact city centre allows many of the sites to be visited on foot. Wandering through the old centre we can take in the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Trevi Fountain. Crossing the River Tiber we explore the Vatican, at the heart of which stands the mighty basilica of St Peter. There is also time to visit the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican museums, which house some of the world's most important art collections.

Rome can be overwhelming. So much history, culture, noise and traffic. Your senses are assaulted from all sides. This guided City Break cuts to the chase. The Roman Forum is at the heart of the ancient city. We’ll wander over the Palatine Hill, home of the Emperors, and gape at the Colosseum, still fantastic nearly 2,000 years since the gladiators fought and died there. Explore the mighty Basilica of St Peter and the Vatican museum’s greatest treasures including the Sistine Chapel and the Raphael rooms. In a city of fountains, there are few to compare with the Fontana di Trevi. Throw in a coin to continue a tradition spanning centuries. The Pantheon is nearby, possibly the best-preserved Roman monument in the city. This is a great shopping city too, with an exciting array of streets crowding around the Piazza di Spagna leading up to the Spanish Steps, a favourite meeting place.

By Air to Rome-Fiumicino: Rome is served by two airports, the largest of which is Leonardo da Vinci (also known as Fiumicino) which handles most scheduled flights and is located about 30km (18 miles) southwest of the city centre. It is served by a number of direct scheduled, charter and 'low-cost' flights from the UK. If you are booking your own flights you may wish to consider one of the following options:
www.britishairways.com flights from Birmingham, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester.
www.alitalia.com flights from Heathrow.
www.globespan.com flights from Edinburgh.
From Leonardo da Vinci airport you can travel to Termini station either by taxi or by the efficient train service direct into the city centre. The train service runs every 30mins and takes approximately 30mins (much quicker than by taxi). Allow €20 return.
By air to Rome-Ciampino: Low-cost airlines tend to use the smaller, former military airport at Ciampino located 15km (9 miles) southeast of the city.
www.ryanair.com flights from Durham Tees Valley, East Midlands, Glasgow, Liverpool, Luton and Stansted.
www.easyjet.com flights from Belfast, Bristol, East Midlands, Gatwick and Newcastle.
From Ciampino Airport, a regular shuttle bus service operates to Termini station in the centre of Rome. The journey costs approximately £16 return and takes 40mins. Timetables and details of the service can be found on www.terravision4easyjet.com. Taxis direct to the hotel cost around £100 return for two and take about 40mins.
