Detailed itinerary

Day 1: arrive in Bordeaux. Transfer to St Emilion, the oldest wine town in France.

Day 2: begin your holiday with a circular walk around the beautiful vineyards of St Emilion; a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Château du Clos de la Madeleine for some excellent wine tasting. (4½ miles, 230ft of ascent)

Day 3: the day begins with a guided tour of the charming city of St Emilion, visiting many Roman monuments. After lunch, enjoy a tasting of some local wines, before being transferred to St Martin de Lerm in the heart of the Entre-Deux-Mers region.

Day 4: today's trail takes you through Bordeaux's prettiest wine region between the Dordogne and Garonne rivers. There are opportunities to taste some of the local wines as you wind your way through the vineyards and then down the Garonne Valley to Caudrot. (10 miles, 330ft of ascent)

Day 5: enjoy a relaxed walk through lush countryside, passing castles and fishermen's huts, as you follow the River Garonne to the village of St Macaire. Take time to discover the medieval remains and gateways of the village. (6½ miles, 90ft of ascent)

Day 6: walk from St Macaire through the surrounding hills to St Croix du Mont, stopping to admire the spectacular views along the way. At the end of your day, walk back to St Macaire and transfer to the village of Sauternes. (10 miles, 330ft of ascent) - shorter options also available.

Day 7: pass through the Sauternes vineyards to the attractive village of Barsac. End your tour with some aperitif tasting at the Château Gravas. (9½ miles, 200ft of ascent)

Day 8: depart after breakfast or stay an extra night in Barsac to relax and explore the area.
