Historic Helmsley Short Break
Helmsley is a delightful, bustling market town, full of character and perfect for those seeking three/four nights or a weekend short break. Our itineraries offer a choice of circular walks and other daily activities to choose from and enjoy. Each walk follows generally good clear paths and tracks.
Helmsley has a rich history, stretching back to 1066 when the area was ruled by the Norman Conquest. In 1186 the earliest foundations of nearby Helmsley Castle were built, under the then Lord of Helmsley Robert de Roos. Still standing today, you can discover over 900 years of castle life and also the nearby ruins of Rievaulx Abbey.
Other local attractions include Duncombe Park, home to Lord and Lady Feversham, Helmsley Wall Garden, Nunnington Hall and Rievaulx Terrace and Temple. All local attractions are within walking distance or a short taxi/bus transfer if you prefer.
The guidebook provided for this tour includes a wide variety of walks for you to pick and choose between. Some walks are assessible by public transport, but others are only accessible by a short car journey. Car parks are available at the start of each walk. [Back to the top]

Some sections are quite strenuous as the path undulates around the moors and along the coast. The trail is well waymarked however and the stunning views make up for the extra effort. |
