With 3 nights in Moscow and 4 in St Petersburg this holiday will give you a true taste of Russia. The flamboyant domes and colours of St Basil’s cathedral are a highlight of any visit to Moscow. We’ll visit the immense fortress of the Kremlin, a mini-city of palaces, towers and churches, where we can see the Armoury’s sumptuous collection of treasures. Outside on Red Square we can enter Lenin’s mausoleum and file past the embalmed body of one of the 20th century’s most influential figures. Another highlight is the stunning Novodevichy Convent with its amazing skyline of domes and turrets. Later we can wander to the Bolshoi Theatre and visit the State Tretyakov Gallery, the national treasury of Russian fine art and one of the greatest museums in the world. We should have time to visit Moscow’s largest market, a dazzling array of art, handmade crafts and antiques before catching the afternoon express train to St Petersburg. In this northern city’s historic heart lies the magnificent Winter Palace, the former residence of the Russian Tsars and now the Hermitage museum, one of Russia’s most impressive attractions. Nearby, we can appreciate the grand architecture of the Admiralty, once headquarters of the Russian navy, and the gleaming domes of St Isaac’s Cathedral. A good way to appreciate Tsar Peter the Great’s ambition is to cruise down the gulf of Finland to visit splendid Petrodvorets, his huge estate of palaces and parks, known as the ‘Russian Versailles’. At the centrepiece is the stunning Grand Cascade and Water Avenue, a symphony of 140 fountains and canals, engineered by Peter himself.
