Two countries, two capital cities, one river. The gardens at the baroque palace of Schloss Belvedere make a relaxing start to a break in the Austrian capital, but for an overview of the city, there is little to beat a tram ride around the Ringstrasse, the grand 19th-century boulevard, built over the city’s defensive walls. Within this belt of wide streets lies the old town - the Innere Stadt - and here we can visit the gothic St Stephen’s cathedral, with its distinctive roof of black, yellow and gold.
The Imperial Crypt of the Habsburgs is also nearby. Following the outer walls of the Imperial Palace, gives us the chance to visit the opulent Imperial State Apartments and tour the Spanish Riding School, home of the majestic Lipizzan horses.
The museums and cafés of the Museumsquartier are another focus for exploring. The Museum of Art History is one of Europe’s finest museums and it’s only a short walk to the Leopold Museum with its wide array of Austrian masterpieces, and Vienna’s State Opera House, one of the symbols of this artistic city. A visit to the Schönbrunn Palace rounds off our exploration of Imperial Vienna.
Less than 40 miles away, the Slovak capital, Bratislava, makes for an excellent day trip by train or hydrofoil down the Danube. The historic centre of the city is dominated by St Martin’s Cathedral and the impressive castle which stands on a plateau, 280ft above the river.
