Q&A: Board Director Rebecca Horlock

As the deadline for standing for election to the HF Holidays Board of Directors for 2020 draws nearer, we asked current Board Director Ben Reid a few questions about what it’s like being on the Board and how he has enjoyed his experience.

Board Director: Ben Reid

Q. When was your first HFholiday and what was the best thing about it?

My first HF holiday was a Family Guided Walking holiday at Dovedale when I was 6 years old. I remember having lots of fun with people of my own age exploring the countryside and playing games together in the evenings after a day of walking.

Q. Why did you decide to become a Member?

I decided to become a Member many years ago after reaching the point where some money off the bar bill would be very useful!

Q. Why did you decide to stand for election to the Board?

I was on maternity leave and thinking about how I could ensure that all the wonderful experiences that I had as a child on HF holidays would be available for my own son and, after some encouragement from family and friends, decided to apply to join the Board to represent a younger generation with families. I hope that adding some diversity to the Board will also encourage others with different backgrounds and life situations to apply for the board in future years.

Q. How do you manage to juggle a new baby, a full time job and your director commitments?

With a lot of help from my other half, family and friends! It is certainly not without its challenges to meet the constant demands of work, family life and being a director but is something that I am committed to doing as HF is an organisation so close to my heart. The most difficult thing for me is to be away from my baby to attend meetings and overnight stays, whilst not taking too much time off work to preserve my limited annual leave.

Q. How have your first few months as a director been?

Very interesting and stimulating! The other Directors and Senior Management Team have been so welcoming and friendly, it really is a pleasure to work with them and learn more about HF.

Q. Has being on the Board changed your view of HF?

No, but it has deepened my understanding of all the work that goes on behind the scenes, the challenges for the organisation and the wonderful people who work there.

Q. What advice would you give to anyone considering standing for election?

If you have a passion for HF then please go for it! I would suggest taking a look at the website to review the skills and time required for the role (https://www. hfholidays.co.uk/membership/join-our-board) and speaking to existing Board members. With directors rolling off the Board each year it is a challenge to make sure we have the required skillsets on the Board at all times, so I would encourage everyone who thinks they can contribute to apply.
