Essential Travel Advice: Coronavirus Outbreak

Coronavirus Travel Advice
Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus, we have been monitoring the situation closely. The welfare of our customers is the priority of everyone at HF Holidays. We continue to closely monitor FCO Travel Advice, updates from airlines and our partners in our holidays destinations together with news reports regarding the current high profile outbreak of Coronavirus.

As the situation develops, we will continue to review government advice, airline policies and local advice from our destinations and revise our holiday itineraries and advice to travellers to ensure that we support the precautions being put in place to contain the virus and protect the health of those travelling with us. Should there be any change to government advice, we will contact any customers affected and update this page.

The principal precautions you can take when travelling are similar to the simple, common sense advice for outbreaks of flu viruses and include:

  • Keep an eye on up to date FCO Travel Advice for your destination and countries visited en route
  • Keep your distance from anyone who looks obviously ill
  • Practice scrupulous hand hygiene – wash your hands with soap - and keep your hands away from your face
  • Use disposable tissues when coughing or sneezing and dispose of used tissues carefully and promptly

Despite the high profile of the current outbreak in the news, Public Health England advise that the risk to travellers outside China remains low. You can further reduce your risk by keeping your distance from large groups of people and washing your hands after coming into contact with high risk areas such as trays used at airport security checkpoints that are handled by large numbers of people. Perhaps surprisingly, Public Health England advises against the use of surgical masks although, for cultural reasons, you may see people wearing these in some destinations.
Should the FCO issue travel advice against all but essential travel to a country, we will of course cancel holidays to the destination while the advice is in force. As always, please ensure that you obtain travel insurance appropriate for your destination, itinerary and nature of your holiday and obtain this at the same time you book your holiday.

Although it is very unlikely that your travel arrangements will be affected by the current Coronavirus outbreak, you are likely to notice additional precautions being put in place at airports, cruise terminals and other major transport hubs.

What are the country houses like?
Our country houses all occupy great locations in Britain’s prime scenic areas. The houses vary in style with many being historic buildings. All have good facilities that you might expect in a hotel including comfortable lounges, a bar, boot and drying rooms; many also having extensive gardens and swimming pools. We try hard to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where our guests can relax in each other’s company. What are your partner hotels like?
We’ve selected amazing and varied walking destinations throughout the world, and recognise that our partner hotels play an important part in making your holiday special. We select our partner hotels with great care – they need to be in beautiful locations, offer great food, a welcoming atmosphere and offer easy access to our walks. Some are large establishments offering a great range of facilities, which may include swimming pools and spa facilities; others are smaller, family-run hotels, which offer a more personal service and an even warmer welcome.

Our Guided Walking Holidays

What are the guided walks like?

The majority of our guided walking holidays offer a choice of walks each day, so there’s something for everyone. In the UK there’ll usually be three different walks on offer: an Easier, Medium and Harder route. In Europe there are usually two walks, an Easier and Harder route.

The difficulty of the walk depends on the location and is often determined by the amount of ascent in the walk, rather than the distance. You’ll find individual walks details – including distance and ascent, on our holiday web pages.

We tend to be away from the hotel from approx 9.30am – 5pm. On some days you’ll walk direct from your accommodation, whilst on others we’ll use a coach or minibus to reach the walk (in Europe we may use a chairlift or cable car to get higher into the mountains).

What walks can I do?

You’ll find a Discovery Point at all of our UK country houses. These contain a great range of walks – anything from 2 to 15 miles.

All our walk directions have been prepared by experienced leaders and contain detailed route notes, photographs and an annotated map.

Do I need to have any previous experience of the activities?

We operate a wide range of holidays, most are open to all levels - from beginners to the more experienced. Others are designed for a certain level of experience or skill. This information is given in our brochures and on our website. It’s worth spending a bit of time selecting a holiday that is right for you.

Brexit advice from ABTA

How will Brexit affect my holiday?

ABTA has said that there's nothing to suggest that you won't be able to continue with your holiday plans after Brexit. Even in a no-deal scenario. HF Holidays have been arranging travel for more than 100 years and are fully bonded members of ABTA and ATOL, so when you book with us, you get complete peace of mind. There's no benefit to booking after Brexit - our prices won't change as there will be no surcharges added to our prices, but by booking early with us you're guaranteed the best price and the widest choice of holiday dates.
