Seminar topics will cover bidding, card play and defence in greater detail, getting you to think hard about your game. Accommodation

Longmynd House is set in a wonderful elevated location above the town of Church Stretton. With excellent walks on the doorstep, and a extensive public rooms, it is an excellent base for our walking    4-star Visit Britain Guest Accommodationand leisure activity holidays.

 

Bedrooms

Longmynd House has 50 bedrooms, all in the main building. These are situated on the top three floors. Some rooms have the benefit of a balcony so that guests can make the most of our enviable hillside location, whilst others overlook the extensive wooded grounds. There is a lift to all floors, and members of staff will always be on hand to welcome you and help with your luggage.

Our classic bedrooms offer comfortable accommodation and an en-suite bathroom with bath or shower. They also have TV, hairdryer, and tea and coffee making facilities. Single rooms are available for an extra £8 per night.

You can enjoy extra space or exceptional views plus additional facilities including a towelling robe and complimentary slippers when you upgrade to a premium bedroom. Premium rooms are available at just £5 extra per person per night.    

If you are travelling with your family, we have a selection of 3 and 4-bedded family bedrooms. These have all the facilities of our classic rooms plus full sized twin or double beds for adults and bunk beds or occasional beds for children.

Lodges

In addition there are 8 brick-built lodges in the grounds - a popular alternative for families or couples. These have either 1 or 2 bedrooms, plus a fully equipped kitchen, sitting/dining room and bathroom. Facilities include TV and DVD player, radio / CD player and hairdryer. Each lodge also has its own patio and parking.

Facilities

All our Country Houses are tailored to the needs of walkers and outdoor enthusiasts and have excellent boot and drying rooms.

Longmynd House is one of our largest Country Houses and has extensive public rooms.

On the ground floor there is a large dining room and lounge bar, both designed to make maximum use of the oustanding views across the Stretton Valley. There is also a central lounge area plus three large additional rooms which can be used as a lounge, for additional dining, or as an activity room for our Leisure Activities holidays. Free WiFi is available in some public rooms and bedrooms.  There is also a range of board games and books. 

A large heated swimming pool (open May to September) and patio is situated on the lower tier beneath the bar and dining room.

Longmynd House sits in extensive wooded grounds. There are pleasant woodland walks on the slopes beneath the hotel, plus a sculpture trail and mini-golf.

Food

All holidays at our Country Houses are Full Board with all meals included, from dinner on arrival to breakfast on the day of your departure.

Start your day with our extensive breakfast. Choose from a wide selection on the cold buffet and/or a full cooked breakfast. Maybe enjoy a lighter option of fruit and yoghurt followed by scrambled egg, go for porridge followed by a full English breakfast, or select something in between.

Choose from our famous self-select picnic lunches - everything you need to keep you going on a day outdoors. Your own choice of sandwiches is prepared to order, and you can add crisps and snacks, fruit, nuts, chocolate bars, sweets and biscuits as you wish.     

Our house-based Leisure Activities include an in-house lunch (generally soup, sandwiches etc).   

The relaxed dinner is a highlight of any stay at our Country Houses. With tables seating up to 10 and no seating plan, it offers a great opportunity to get to know your fellow guests. There is always a choice of dishes for every course, featuring good British cooking and often local specialities. A vegetarian option is always available.

All our Country Houses have a well-stocked bar serving local beers, wine and spirits.

Evening

Guided Walking: enjoy a glass of wine or local beer in the bar before a talk about the next day's walks. After dinner there will be an activity or entertainment which you will be welcome to join. These vary from week to week but could include a talk on local wildlife from a visiting speaker or a team quiz. Alternatively if you prefer, feel free to just relax in our lounge or bar.

Leisure Activities: many of our Leisure Activities holidays continue into the evening with programmed sessions. Other holidays will have the evenings free, and you will be welcome to join in other social activities that may be happening in the house.

Family holidays: our activity leaders are on hand to organise children’s activities and games for younger children before dinner. These could include rounders, outdoor games, or crafts. After dinner there are further activities for the whole family.

Self-Guided Walking: there may be evening social activities happening in the house during your holiday, and you will be most welcome to join in. However, not all self-guided holidays will have evening activities available – if these are important to you, please check before booking.

Accessibility

Car Parking and Arrival

We have ample private car parking located at the front of the hotel. The car park is level and illuminated at night. Check in is normally from 3pm, earlier arrival may be possible, please advise us accordingly. Disabled Parking can be found to the side of the main entrance.

Main Entrance and Reception and Public Areas

The car park and main entrance to hotel are both on ground level. Our main door opens inwards and is 166 cm wide. The hotel reception is situated to the left of our main entrance. Our Bar, Restaurant and Functions rooms are also all located on the ground floor. There are fitted carpets everywhere in the hotel and from our lounge there is only a small step measuring 10 cm high down onto the corridor leading to our foyer. However this is not a problem as we have more than one method of access to these public areas which does not involve the usage of the step. Also at the entrance to one of our function rooms we have a step measuring 10.5 cm high which can also be accessed from an alternative ground floor access.

The front door remains unlocked until 11pm approx when the bar closes, to access the hotel building after this please make arrangements with reception on check in. There is a bell at the reception desk to summon assistance. Assistance with luggage is also available upon check-in and check out.

There is just one main staircase in the hotel giving access to all three floors. From the foyer there are 11 steps to a “half” landing, then to the left another 8 steps to a “half” landing, then to the left again another 8 steps to the landing of the first floor. Then from the first floor there are 9 steps to a “half” landing, to the left another 8 steps to a “half” landing then again to the left another 4 steps to the landing of the second floor. Then from the second floor to the third floor there are 9 steps to a “half” landing, then to the left another 8 steps to a “half” landing then to the left again just one step to the third floor landing. On average there is a 18 cm gap between each step. There is a wooden handrail which travels from Ground floor to third floor. There is also an elevator which can be found just beside the stair case in foyer also going to all three floors if required.

We have male and female toilets on the ground floor in the reception area and also a disabled toilet on the third floor which can be accessed by elevator or staircase. Please contact reception if you require access to this bathroom during your stay with us.

Longmynd House has central heating and individual thermostats on all bedroom radiators, Electric fans are available for the rooms during hot weather if required.

The Lounge

Guests are welcome to use the lounge at any time. It is furnished with a selection of arm chairs and sofas. We light an open coal fire in the winter evenings and provide magazines, news papers and board games for the guests’ enjoyment.

The Dining Room

We have two main restaurants, Caradoc and Ashlett, although our other two function rooms have licences to serve food too, so in high season or during busy periods then the other two function rooms, Ragleth and Burway, can also be used as restaurants. Our tables are of standard height can easily accommodate wheelchair users. The dining chairs are high backed and are wooden. The chairs do not have arm rests although this can be provided. The dining room floor is flat and covered with fitted carpets. There is one step down into the lower section of the restaurant. An alternative route can be arranged for wheelchair users.

A full and varied breakfast menu is on offer and any dietary requirements can be catered for with priory notice. For lunch and evening meals we offer a varied menu of which the chefs are using locally sourced, high quality produce. The chef is always happy to discuss dietary requirements you may have.

The Bar

The bar is spread across our Caradoc restaurant and Lounge area, and can be seen from the reception foyer. The furniture is a mixture of tables and chairs in different styles.

Bedrooms

We have 50 bedrooms all of which are fully carpeted with en-suite bathrooms. Some of our rooms have balconies and views across the valley. They all have televisions with remote controls. Every room has clock-radios and tea coffee making facilities. Each room has a seating area, either with an arm chair or sofa. In the room we also provide hair dryers and a selection of reading material. Beds are made up of crisp white cotton under sheets, white cotton top sheet and blankets and soft cotton pillow cases. Some beds have throws and there are extra blankets and pillows in the wardrobe. All the single beds are 3 Foot wide and 2 Foot high and the double beds are 4 Foot 6” and 2 Foot high.

The majority of our bedrooms have showers which have a step 9 inches into them.

Lodges

The main door to the lodge may have a step in, which varies in size up to a maximum of 9 inches. Alternative access can be arranged or a ramp can be provided with prior notice. All lodges are heated and have a fully equipped kitchen, sitting/dining room, bedroom(s) and bath room (bath with shower over). Bed linen and towels are provided. All the single beds are 3ft wide and 2ft high and the double beds are 4ft 6" and 2ft high.

Outside areas

We have two outdoor seating areas, one just in front of the main entrance, on a wooden deck ten 6 inch steps up or via ramp. The other seating area is only open from April – October every year as there is a 14m by 6m swimming pool, the shallow end being 1m and the deep end 3m. During the swimming pool opening times deck chairs and tables are put out for guests to sit and relax if they wish.

Additional Information

Assistance dogs accompanying visually or hearing impaired guests are welcome; dogs must be kept on a lead or harness at all times.

Fire evacuation notices are displayed in the bedrooms and throughout the hotel. Each room has its own smoke sensor and fire alarm. In the event of a fire a very loud continuous alarm sounds and emergency lighting comes on. We have portable Deaf guard fire alarm system for those who are hard of hearing. This consists of a vibrating pad to go under the pillow and a bright strobe light. The Deaf guard is triggered when main alarm is activated.

In the case of evacuation there are fire exits in every function room, bar and restaurant as well as the main front entrance. On the first, second and third floors there are fire exits at either end of the corridors which open to an emergency fire escape stairwell.

Please advise reception on check in if you think you would require assistance in the event of an emergency. Door hangers are available in the rooms which can be used to indicate a need for assistance. Fire extinguishers are found throughout the building, as are fire call points. If you discover a fire please call 9-999 from your room phone, raise the alarm and alert a member of staff.

Itinerary

Monday: Arrival Day
You can check in to your room from 2.30pm onwards. Please join us for afternoon tea at 4pm. All guests are invited – we’ll introduce your leader and welcome you to your holiday.

Your first Bridge session starts at 5pm and continues again after dinner. 

Daily programme

9.30am-12.30pm: Bridge seminar and practice hands, with a break for morning coffee. 

12.30pm: Enjoy a house-based lunch e.g. soup & sandwich. Afternoons are free for relaxing or exploring the local area independently. Guests are welcome to stay in the Bridge room and play further hands if they prefer.

5pm-10.30pm: Bridge competition, with a break for the evening meal 

Departure day: Depart after a leisurely breakfast

Please note: The evening competition is structured by Duplicate Bridge movements which organise which competitors play which opponents and when and on which boards. In order to ensure fair competition and the correct "balance", we are obliged to ask that guests either take part in the whole evening competition (ie from 5pm through to 10.30pm) or "sit out" the entire competition on any particular evening. Please inform your Bridge leader as soon as possible if you intend not to attend the evening bridge competition.

What to bring

All your Bridge stationery and equipment will be supplied. You may, however, like to bring a notebook and pen to make your own notes. EBU Members - don’t forget to bring your EBU membership number to earn Master Points on this holiday.

The attractive small town of Church Stretton is around 10 minutes' walk away. After the arrival of the railway, the town grew in the Victorian and Edwardian eras and became known as 'Little Switzerland' due to the dramatic hills on both sides of the valley. Today the town retains its bygone charm and has a range of facilities including a variety of small shops, banks, cafés, pubs and a supermarket.

Easily reached by  train, or around 20 minutes' drive away, Ludlow is a particularly attractive market town. The historic centre retains many of its medieval buldings, and is towered over by its well-preserved castle. In recent years the town has developed as something of a gastronomic centre, being home to celebrated Michelin-starred restaurants and many acclaimed local food producers. www.ludlowcastle.com

Iron bridge across the River SevernIronbridge Gorge
A little further afield, about 45 minutes' drive from Church Stretton, are the many excellent museums of Ironbridge Gorge. Known as the 'birthplace of the Industrial Revolution' it was here that Abraham Darby perfected the manufacture of cast iron which was later used to build the area's iconic iron bridge across the River Severn. Today there are 10 museums in the gorge including the Museum of Iron, the Coleport China Museum and the excellent Blists Hill Victorian town. www.ironbridge.org.uk/

Steam trains at a station on the Severn Valley RailwaySevern Valley Railway
The Severn Valley Railway is one of Britain's premier steam railways. This lovingly recreated Great Western Railway branch line is now run largely by volunteers and is home to an impressive collection of locomotives. As its name suggests the line follows the rural valley of the River Severn from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster. The nearest station at Bridgnorth is about 40 minutes' drive from Church Stretton. www.svr.co.uk

Shrewsbury
Also easily reached by train, or a 30 minute drive, Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire. The town centre is particularly attractive featuring many black and white timber houses dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. 

Much Wenlock
The small town of Much Wenlock, about 30 minutes' drive from Church Stretton, is particularly attractive with many black and white timbered houses. Despite its small size the town can claim to be the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games.

Hereford
The cathedral city of Hereford, is just under an hour's drive away, and can also be reached by direct train from Church Stretton. Hereford Cathedral houses a chained library and the famous Mappa Mundi, a 13th century map of the world. www.herefordcathedral.org

Attingham Park
A grand 18th century house surrounded by an extensive deer park, located outside Shrewsbury, around 25 minutes' drive away. Now managed by the National Trust you can visit the ornate rooms and explore the walled garden and grounds. www.nationaltrust.org.uk/attingham-park

Powis Castle and its surrounding gardensPowis Castle
This former medieval fortress has been remodelled  over more than 400 years – each generation adding to the magnificent collection of paintings, sculpture, furniture and tapestries. Theworld-famous garden is overhung with clipped yews, and shelters rare and tender plants. Walls of Chirk CastleChirk Castle

How to get to us by train

By train:

The nearest train station is Church Stretton, which is less than a mile from Longmynd House. However the house is at the top of a very steep hill (it has great views!) so a taxi is recommended, particularly if you have heavy luggage. HF station transfer - great value!

Our station transfer operates every Friday and Monday between Church Stretton station and Longmynd House. The pickup is at 3.15pm from Church Stretton station station. On departure day the transfer will get you back to the station for 9.15am or 9.45am. This transfer costs just £5 return, however a place must be reserved in advance by calling 0345 470 7558.

 

Get to us by Taxi

By taxi:

If you can’t meet our station transfer it is possible to book a taxi. Details of our current recommended taxi company and rates will be sent to you with your booking. The return taxi journey can be arranged on your behalf by the Longmynd House Manager.

 

Driving to us

By car:

Follow the A49 to Church Stretton. At the traffic lights turn off the A49 into the town. At the first T junction turn left into the High Street. Go straight over the mini-roundabout, and then take the next right into Cunnery Road. Follow the road up a steep hill and around a hairpin bend. Longmynd House is at the top of the hill on the left hand side. Look out for our sign. A car park is available in the grounds with free parking.

 

Leaders

Cliff Little

Cliff has been playing Bridge since his University days and is keen to pass on to others the enjoyment that can be had from the game making it a fun, competitive and enjoyable social pastime. Cliff is Chairman of his local Bridge Club, an English Bridge Union (EBU) trained teacher and a qualified County Tournament Director.   Cliff teaches Standard English Acol, the EBU recommended system, both privately and at evening classes at the local Technical College, and also gives tuition in the less common systems used by more experienced players.

Lovely location and good food. A thermostat on the heating would be a good idea, as it was very hot in the hotel all the time.
