Itinerary

Each day our experienced leader will lead you on a sightseeing walk of Bruges, exploring the different areas of the city. One day will also be spent in neighbouring Ghent, easily reached by train. You should expect to spend most of the day sightseeing by foot.

Highlights of the sightseeing programme include:

Bruges’ medieval centre: UNSECO-heritage listed, the attractive centre contains architecture spanning Gothic, Romanesque and Renaissance periods. Exploring the enticing cobbled streets, you’ll come across the Market Square and Burg Square, and the Basilica of the Holy Blood.

Boat trip: Bruges is made for a boat trip with its network of canals. From here you will glimpse a different view of the city as you pass picturesque bridges and quaint houses.

Damme: Located outside of Bruges, Damme used to be the port for Bruges during the 13th century and today you can visit the historic village centre.

Ghent: This lively, university city is often overlooked but has a wealth of historical buildings, museums and St Bavo’s Cathedral, home of a major work by Rubens and altarpiece by Jan van Eyck.

Holiday information

Admission fees: Admission fees are not included in the cost of the holiday. As a general guide, you should allow around €45, although reductions on admission costs are often available for students and senior citizens. A 3-day pass for €15 is available and is useful on this itinerary.

Local transport: On this City Break the majority of the sightseeing will be by foot due to the compact size of Bruges’ and Ghent’s city centres. The return train journey from Bruges to Ghent is included in the holiday price. Your leader will provide further information on arrival in Bruges.

In the evenings: This holiday is sold on a bed and breakfast basis. However, your leader will make arrangements at local restaurants should members of the group wish to eat together. You will find that most guests enjoy dining together but the choice is yours. If you do choose to dine independently, your leader will be happy to offer suggestions and advice.

Travel

‘With train’ holidays

For train times and prices please see the Dates & Prices tab.

We offer travel by Eurostar and local train from London St. Pancras or Ebbsfleet to Bruges via Lille or Brussels.

If you book a ‘with train’ holiday with us, we automatically include transfers between the train station and the hotel. The transfer takes 5 minutes.

Independent travellers

All our overseas holidays can also be booked without a flight or train. This is ideal if you are travelling from overseas, or prefer to make your own arrangements from your local area. If you choose this option the transfer to the hotel is not included.

Some City Break itineraries can involve sightseeing on your arrival day, depending on train times. If you travel independently and arrive after the HF Holidays' train, you may miss some of the first day's activities (provisional HF Holidays’ train times can be found on the dates and prices tab or call 020 8732 1220). If your arrival time coincides with that of the HF Holidays' train you can join our hotel transfer at a cost of £5.00 (single). Transfers must be pre-booked. Please call 020 8732 1220. Please note that HF Holidays is not responsible for your onward travel if you fail to meet this transfer.

Another excellent city break from HF. A short but very interesting 4 days, guided by an enthusiastic and knowledgeable leader who ensured we saw everything we wanted.

Product review:

A perfect place for a short break. Everything you want to see is within easy walking distance, with the bonus that delicious evening meals are also within easy reach from the hotel. A charming place which manages to retain its medieval atmosphere.
We're so pleased you enjoyed our City Break, it really is a fantastic city with so much to discover.

All the best,

A good city break, but the hotel was very small and basic, also on a main road so noisy at night.

A good tour with walks and visits to both cities, with boat trips and other things you could do as you wished.
