Holiday overview

A guided City Break with an HF Holidays’ leader is the ideal way to explore this magical city straddling the Vltava River. Follow the maze of medieval cobbled streets in the city’s fairytale Old Town. View the city of a hundred spires from one of Prague’s many bridges across the Vltava. Explore Prague’s former Jewish quarter with its atmospheric cemetery and synagogues.

Holiday highlights:

  • Discover elegant Wenceslas Square
  • Listen to the striking of the clock of Tyn Church in the Old Town Square
  • Be amazed at the gothic delights of St Vitus cathedral, within the walls of the castle
  • Spend time in the old Jewish Quarter

Great reasons to join us:

  • Great value: all prices include ensuite bed & breakfast accommodation in the centrally located Hotel Beranek
  • Knowledgeable leader: explore the city of Prague on foot and using local transport where necessary with our friendly leader
  • Sociability: we pride ourselves on the sociable atmosphere of our holidays, explore together, relax together, and if you want, dine together in the evenings

Itinerary

Each day our experienced leader will lead you on a sightseeing walk of Prague, exploring the different areas of the city. Although you should expect to spend most of the day sightseeing by foot, the metro and tram network will also be used during the programme.

Highlights of the sightseeing programme include:

Old Town Square: The focal point of the Old Town is made up of attractive Romanesque and Gothic buildings and known for its Astronomical Clock.

Charles Bridge: Prague’s picture-postcard image, this Gothic bridge was built to connect the Old Town with the palace and offers great views over the Prague skyline.

Little Quarter: Clustered around the base of the palace complex, the Little Quarter is a quaint area of old burgher streets and cobbled lanes and at the centre, the baroque St Nicholas church.

Jewish Quarter: One of the most atmospheric areas of the city dating back to the 12th century. Today, the oldest synagogue in Europe and a Jewish cemetery from the 15th century remains.

Royal Palace: More like a walled town than a castle, this expansive complex includes a cathedral, palace, a cobbled street lined with old cottages and craft shops, gardens and museums.

Holiday information

Every effort is made to adhere to this itinerary, however there may be circumstances beyond our control which could lead to a change in the programme.

Admission fees: Admission fees are not included in the cost of the holiday. As a general guide, you should allow around 1750kc (approx £60), although reductions on admission costs are often available for students and senior citizens.

Local transport: During this City Break the sightseeing programme will involve the use of the metro and tram network. Local travel expenses are not included. Your leader will advise you on the best travel cards to purchase. Please allow up to €65 for a local Prague Card.

In the evenings: This holiday is sold on a Bed and Breakfast basis. However, your leader will make arrangements at local restaurants should members of the group wish to eat together. You will find that most guests enjoy dining together but the choice is yours. If you do choose to dine independently, your leader will be happy to offer suggestions and advice.

Travel

‘With Flight’ holidays

For flight times and prices please see the Dates & Prices tab.

We offer flights from Heathrow to Prague.

If you book a ‘with flight’ holiday with us, we automatically include transfers between the airport and the hotel. The coach transfer takes 45 minutes.

Independent travellers

All our overseas holidays can also be booked without a flight. This is ideal if you are travelling from overseas, or prefer to make your own arrangements from your local airport. If you choose this option the transfer to the hotel is not included.

Some City Break itineraries can involve sightseeing on your arrival day, depending on flight times. If you travel independently and arrive after the HF Holidays' flight, you may miss some of the first day's activities (provisional HF Holidays’ flight times can be found on the dates and prices tab or call 020 8732 1220). If your flight arrival time coincides with that of the HF Holidays' flight you can join our hotel transfer at a cost of £11.50 (single). Transfers must be pre-booked. Please call 020 8732 1220. Please note that HF Holidays is not responsible for your onward travel if you fail to meet this transfer.

Service review:

The pick up at the airport was poor. We waited an hour with our guide who was having difficulty contacting the taxi service. The guide was obviously anxious about the situation and didn't seem to respond to offers of help.

Product review:

I would tick an average box if able to! The hotel breakfast was poor and the breakfast room was unbearably overcrowded. Coach parties were breakfasting at the same time. On the Thursday and Friday I abandoned breakfast at the hotel and went to a pleasant cafe nearby. The guide worked hard but her pace was rather too fast. I probably should have opted out on occasions but I was interested in what was shown. I did mention that I liked a slower pace but possibly I should have made my wishes clearer. Restaurants were well chosen except the last one which was far too noisy for me. I did find Prague interesting but I won't do another city break because I found the large number of people at the most popular destinations unpleasant. It was easy to lose sight of the group if for a moment something caught your eye and you were distracted. That made the visits a little more stressful but this was obviously understandable in such busy places.

Product review:

My one reservation is that the brochure describing the trip arrived after I got home. There needs to be better coordination about that. We had traveled with HF to Croatia the week before and had left the US on Oct 8. I suggest HF do a cross-check on their computer to see if the guests are booking more than one holiday so that the info materials arrive in advance of the trip.
