Bay of Kotor, Perast and Kotor
We’ll drive to the picturesque old town of Perast, nestling at the foot of the mountains standing between the two bays of the inner Boka and opposite the Verige channel, for an opportunity to explore the town and the nearby island of Our Lady of the Rock. The coach will then drive back along the Bay to Kotor whose old city is surrounded by walls that rise spectacularly to the crest of a rocky hillside. Old Kotor is a densely packed triangle of twisting streets and tiny squares, cafés and churches, and is a delight to simply wander through and explore.
Stari Bar and the Gradiste Monastery
Inland from Bar is the ruined old city of Stari Bar. A remarkable walled city, devastated by an earthquake along the coast in 1979, it has been largely rebuilt and it is well worth visiting. We’ll take a short walk around the ruins. Another highlight of today is a visit to the Gradiste Monastery, a UNESCO protected cultural site.
Budva and the Rezevici Monastery
Budva is surrounded by natural beauty, bay islands and beaches, but it is also full of cultural and historic monuments. The old town lies on a narrow peninsula and is criss-crossed with narrow streets and squares. We’ll also visit the cultural historical monument that is the Rezevici Monastery, housing three smaller churches and some wonderful restored paintings.
Lake Skadar National Park
Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans and is an important habitat for water birds. It also has the status of a national park. We’ll spend some time in Virpazar at the northern tip of the lake, call in at the National Park visitor centre and enjoy a boat ride on the lake.
Cetinje and Lovcen National Park
A visit to the former capital, Cetinje, a scenic drive through Lovcen National Park dominated by Mount Lovcen and a serpentine road with amazing views over Kotor and Tivat.
All transport relevant to the itinerary (hired minibus, or local transport) is included in the price of your holiday, but for flexibility we do not include entrances to museums etc (allow €12 per person).
Discovery holidays involve active sightseeing and you should expect to spend lots of time on your feet. Optional short walks of approximately 2½ miles allow you to stretch your legs and see the best of the local scenery.
Free day – on our 7 night holidays we allow one free day where there is no organised excursion. This is an ideal opportunity for you to relax, enjoy the hotel facilities or explore independently.
An introduction to the area
Situated on the beautiful Montenegrin coast, the small resort of Petrovac is a very attractive base from which to explore the local area. The town itself centres on the pretty promenade and picturesque harbour, where you’ll find a good selection of souvenir shops, bars and cafés. Immediately behind rise the Rumija Mountains. Just to the north of Petrovac is the stunning old town of Sveti Stefan built on a tiny island and reached by a spit of land. Inland lie the beautiful waters of Lake Skadar where we will enjoy a cruise. The highlight of the week will be the day spent in Lovćen National Park high above the dramatic Kotor Fjord, and a trip to the perfectly preserved old towns on the fjord is highly recommended for your free day.
Perast and Kotor - The picturesque old town of Perast nestles at the foot of the mountains and stands between the two bays of the inner Boka and opposite the Verige channel. Old Kotor is surrounded by walls that rise spectacularly to the crest of a rocky hillside. It’s a densely packed triangle of twisting streets and tiny squares, cafés and churches, and is a delight to just wander through and explore.
Budva - Nestling to the west of the lively holiday resort of Budva, to the north of Petrovac, Budva Stari Grad or Old Town has existed since before the 5th century BC. When the Roman empire was divided the border between it and Byzantium was drawn through Budva. The town has been meticulously restored after extensive damage by an earthquake in 1979 and there are many squares, museums, narrow streets and a busy harbour to explore.
Beaches - Within easy walking distance south of Petrovac is the quiet cove of Lučice for swimming with café facilities available. A little further is the wide expanse of reed backed Buljarica Beach. There are sunbeds on the beach by the hotel in Petrovac and an excellent pool at the hotel.
Details of other seasonal excursions are available from your leaders and the hotel.
Shops & facilities:
There are many bars and souvenir shops along the promenade. There is a small grocery store behind the hotel. There are several ATMs around town and a large supermarket.
We recognise that everyone’s travel arrangements are unique, so all our holidays to Europe can be booked ‘with flight’ or ‘without flight’, giving you more flexibility and choice.

‘Without flight’ holidays – the flexible travel option
Alternatively, tailor your journey to suit you by booking your holiday ‘without flight’ allowing you the freedom to book your own flights from your local airport.
