Vik and the mighty Sognefjord
The world's longest fjord, Hopperstad Stave church and Kristianhus Museumm
Vik is an historic settlement situated on the edge of the mighty Sognefjord, the longest fjord in the world in the heart of Norway’s fjordland. The journey is incredibly scenic and provides ample opportunity to stop and take in the surroundings. In Vik we’ll explore the Hopperstad Stave church and you may like to visit the Kristianhus Boat and Engineering Museum, where you can experience what life was like for the seafarers of the Sognefjord in years gone by. We’ll have the chance to take a short cultural walk along the shores of the Sognefjord to view some boathouses.
Voss and Bordalsgjelet
Norway's 'adventure capital' and the Bordalsgjelet gorge
Voss, known as the ‘adventure capital of Norway’, is surrounded by snowy mountain tops, valleys and forests, rivers, waterfalls, and lakes. We’ll visit Voss church Vangskykja, built in 1271-77 and still in use today, and the Folkemuseum, which preserves items of historic interest from Voss and the surrounding area. In the afternoon we visit Bordalsgjelet, a spectacular natural attraction within walking distance from Voss town centre, where we enjoy an impressive view of the potholes that have been formed by the ice and river over a period of many thousands of years
Norway in a Nutshell
The scenic Bergen-Oslo and Flåmsbana railways, the Aurlandsfjord and the Naeroyfjord
The ‘Norway in a nutshell’ trip takes you through some of Norway’s most beautiful fjord scenery. Today you will experience the scenic Bergen-Oslo railway, the breathtaking Flåmsbana railway from Myrdal to Flam, and a ferry journey on the Aurlandsfjord and the narrow Naeroyfjord to Gudvangen.
Hardangerfjord & Vøringfossen
Spectacular fjord scenery and the majestic Vøringfossen waterfall
Hardangerfjord is the third largest fjord in the world and the second largest in Norway. We’ll spend the day touring the area including a stop at the visitors centre, and a visit to Vøringfossen, Norway’s most famous waterfall with a 182 metre fall.
Osa and Ulvik
Apples, Cider and the Hjadlane Gallery of Contemporary Art
We’ll spend today in Ulvik, famed for its fruit trees and cider making. We’ll take a short walk along the fruit and cider walk, possibly tasting some of the produce along the way. We’ll also visit the Hjadlane Gallery of Contemporary Art in Osa.
All transport relevant to the itinerary (hired minibus, or local transport) is included in the price of your holiday, but for flexibility we do not include entrances, or optional cable car rides (allow NOK 500-700 per person).
Discovery holidays involve active sightseeing and you should expect to spend lots of time on your feet. Optional short walks of approximately 2½ miles allow you to stretch your legs and see the best of the local scenery.
Free day – on our 7 night holidays we allow one free day where there is no organised excursion. This is an ideal opportunity for you to relax, enjoy the hotel facilities or explore independently.
Set at the head of the Ulvika Fjord, an arm of the Hardanger Fjord, Ulvik is surrounded by spectacular high mountains with steep sides, a remnant of the ice ages experienced in Norway, which carved out the many Fjords and dramatic landscapes of this part of the world. The village itself was mostly destroyed by fire during a German invasion in World War II. Now, the village is a mecca for tourism, from Walking in the summer months, to Skiing and Snowshoeing in winter to Water sports and boat rides, Ulvik is a perfect centre for interest and beauty. For something a bit different, there is a local fruit farm, a bird observation hut to discover the local wildlife, or the Olav Hauge museum, an interactive museum about the local area.
Sitting at the end of the Eidfjorden, another branch of the Hardanger Fjord, Eidfjord has a variety of attractions, and history to explore. The Sima Power Plant, built into the mountains, is a large Hydro Electric Power Plant, which moderates water flow of three major waterfalls in the area. The area has a mild climate, and produces fruit from apples and pears, to plums and cherries, a beautiful site, when the fruit tree flowers are in bloom on the mountain sides. Another attraction of Eidfjord, is the Hardangervidda National Park, which is home to Europe’s largest mountain plateau and also one of Norway’s largest Glaciers. From a walker’s perspective, Eidfjord is stunning, and is an area, which contains an abundance of Iron Age burial sites. There is a regular ferry from Ulvik to Eidfjord across the Fjord.
Voss is the adventure capital of Norway, and like Ulvik and Eidfjord has a great deal of culture. One of the major attractions there is the highly regarded Folks Museum built on the site of a farm and incorporating its buildings into an explanation of traditional Norwegian rural life. There is also a lot of food heritage, and as such, there are several delicacies to try out in the local cafes. Voss can be reached by bus from Ulvik.
