A buffet style evening meal is served in the Bellini restaurant on five evenings, where you can choose from a good selection of international and local dishes, There is usually antipasta, salads and soup for starters, followed by a selection of hot savoury meals. Desserts tend to be pies and pastries, followed by tea and coffee. Evening

The friendly atmosphere of our holidays continues into the evening.

Enjoy a glass of wine or local beer before hearing about the next day's activities. On most evenings there will be some kind of entertainment: an excursion to Mdina to see it by moonlight - the effect is amazing; listening to a local speaker on the human history of the Maltese people or relaxing in the hotel bar, where you will find live entertainment on some evenings.

Alternatively, take a stroll around Mellieha and visit one of the local bars, or relax with a drink and chat to your fellow guests. Your leader will inform you of what options are available.

HF Holidays walks level 1 easierEasier Walks: 5 to 7 miles (8-11km) with up to 700ft (210m) of ascent in a day.

HF Holidays walks grade 2 easyHarder Walks: 7 to 9 miles (11-14.5km) with up to 1,400ft (420m) of ascent in a day.

Combine visits to some of Malta's best historic sites with walks on the island's dramatic rocky coast.  We'll walk on the sandy beaches of Golden Bay and the breathtaking Dingli Cliffs, taking in pre-historic temples and pretty fishing harbours.  A Sightseeing day in the capital Valletta with a local guide will introduce you to the city's magnificent location and wealth of historic buildings. Our leaders will offer a choice of two walks on each walking day.

On your free day enjoy a short scenic ferry trip to Gozo, where you may wish to take a tour of an agricultural estate with a food and wine tasting, followed by a land train sightseeing trip back to the hotel.

Day 1: Arrival day
The journey to the hotel in Mellieha is by minibus. Time permitting, your leaders will explain more about the walks on the first evening. Should this not be possible we’ll meet after breakfast on the first morning of your stay.

Day 2: Northern peninsula
These walks explore the northern tip of Malta, from the older part of Mellieha village and onto rocky open ground to contour around the northern coastline with fine views of Gozo and Comino.

Easier Walk: 5 miles (8km) with up to 500ft (150m) of ascent
Harder Walk: 7 miles (11km) with up to 900ft (270m) of ascent

Day 3: Valletta - sightseeing excursion
The World Heritage City of Valletta merits a great deal of exploration and this sightseeing day will introduce you to the key sights. Our tour starts with a walking tour around the city with a blue badge guide, stopping at Upper Barrakka Gardens with panoramic views over the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities, and concluding with a visit to St John’s Co-Cathedral. There is then free time for you to explore Valletta before a not-to-be-missed harbour cruise.

Day 4: Dingli Cliffs to Blue Grotto or Mdina
Today’s visit is to the Dingli Cliffs, the highest point on Malta. We walk through Buskett Gardens (once the hunting ground of the Grand Masters) towards the Dingli Cliffs. Close to the cliffs we see the remains of Ghar-il-Kbir cave dwellings and a series of distinctive prehistoric cart ruts. This visit will be enhanced by a local guide who was brought up in the area. The afternoon is spent sightseeing with the option of (a) visiting 4th century catacombs, the museum of Roman Antiquities and soaking up the atmosphere in the Silent City of Mdina or (b) visiting the temple complex of Hagar Qim, which can be seen before descending to Wied iz-Zurrieq where there is the option of a boat trip to the Blue Grotto in good weather.

Easier Walk: 5 miles (8km) with up to 300ft (90m) of ascent
Harder Walk: 9 miles (14.5km) with up to 900ft (270m) of ascent

Day 5: Free day
Each week there is a free day when no guided walks are offered. This is an ideal opportunity to relax around the hotel, walk independently or visit local places of interest.

Day 6: Marsascala and Marsaxlokk
These walks link two traditional Maltese fishing villages on the southeastern corner of the island. We start at Marsascala harbour from where we follow the coast past a series of deep-cut bays and promontories. A delightful spot for lunch and swimming is reached before we continue along the shore through the ‘sculpture park’ of Peter’s Pool. There is an option to continue on to Delimara Point to stand only 200 miles north of Africa. We walk to Marsaxlokk, with its profusion of colourful
fishing boats bobbing in the harbour, and a quayside market.

Easier Walk: 7 miles (11km) with up to 400ft (120m) of ascent
Harder Walk: 9 miles (14.5km) with up to 900ft (270m) of ascent

Day 7: Ancient city to sandy bays
From the ancient city of Mdina – the original capital of Malta – we descend into the fertile Qleigha Valley and a series of manmade reservoirs called the Chadwick Lakes. There is time to view the wayside chapel and the honeycomb of ancient tombs beneath the Victorian Line fortifications along the escarpment ridge. After the Bingemma Gap we make our way mainly by coastal paths to Golden Bay where there will be time for a swim.

Easier Walk: 6 miles (9.5km) with up to 600ft (180m) of ascent
Harder Walk: 8 miles (13km) with up to 900ft (270m) of ascent

Day 8: Departure day
or transfer day for guests holidaying on Gozo.

Please note that the itinerary outlined is provisional and could be subject to change. A finalised itinerary will be available at the resort and every evening your leaders will talk to you about the next day’s walks.

For festive breaks itineraries will differ to allow guests to enjoy the festivities.

Local area

An introduction to the area

The landscape of Malta is one of low hills with terraced green and brown fields. The coastline, although only 85 miles in circumference, is extremely varied, with cliffs, harbours, bays, creeks, sandy beaches and rocky coves. There are many interesting remains of Malta's ancient heritage including Neolithic temples, 4th century catacombs, Roman ruins and churches built by the Knights of St John. Our base on Malta is the village of Mellieha, situated on the hilltop above Mellieha Bay. It covers two sides of the valley, the newer part of the village is to the east and the older residential part is to the west.

Gozo is about one third of Malta’s size and has a character quite distinct from its neighbouring island. It is more rural, with an extensive farming community and the countryside is greener and more scenic. Controls over building developments enabled Gozo to keep its rural charm. Flat-topped hills and intensely cultivated fields characterize the landscape whilst the coast has rugged cliffs, steep valleys and beautiful inlets. Baroque churches and old stone farmhouses dot the countryside. The islands also come complete with historical sites, forts and amazing panoramas, as well as one of the archipelago’s best-preserved prehistoric temples, Ggantija. The strong religious beliefs of the Maltese people are evident in the numerous churches and other religious attractions are also abundant on the island.

Local highlights

Valletta - Although we visit Valletta on day 3, it is impossible to explore this World Heritage City in one day. The city is home to the National Museum of Archaeology, where a fascinating collection of artefacts from Malta's prehistoric sites are housed; the War Museum, which tells the story of the Siege of Malta during the Second World War; the Manoel Theatre (a beautiful old theatre), and an inhabited 16th century patrician town house.

Mdina & Rabat -Mdina is an important UNESCO heritage site. It is the oldest city on the island and derives its name from the Arabic word 'medina' meaning walled city. Mdina is lamp-lit by night and often referred to as the “silent city”. The cathedral and cathedral museum are worth a visit. It is a fascinating place with its rich cultural and religious treasures. The impressive palaces are still home to some of Malta’s aristocratic families. Rabat is home to the famous catacombs of St Paul and St Agatha and the impressive St Paul’s Church which stands above a grotto where St Paul is said to have taken refuge after his shipwreck on Malta

Comino: Named after the cumin seed that once flourished in the Maltese islands, Comino is noted for its tranquility and isolation. It has a permanent population of only four residents. One priest and one policeman commute from the nearby island of Gozo, to render their services to the local population and summertime visitors. Today, Comino is a bird sanctuary and nature reserve and can be reached by boat from Mgarr.

Shops & facilities:

Malta: As the village of Mellieha is situated on the through route to the Gozo ferry, bus services to the capital Valletta are frequent. There are several bars and cafes on the main street and a variety of small shops. The Post Office and banks can also be found here.

‘With flight’ holidays – the hassle-free option

If you choose this option we automatically include return transfers between the airport and the hotel.

The coach transfer takes approx 45 minutes to the Solana Hotel.

‘Without flight’ holidays the flexible travel option

We found Malta to be generally uninteresting and not particularly attractive. Walking too as only average.
Thank you for your feedback.

I was pleased that, overall, you did enjoy your holiday although you did find certain aspects of it disappointing.

We do try to make our European holiday destinations as varied and interesting as possible and Malta was a country that many of our guests wanted to visit. It has proved, on the whole, to be popular.

I do hope that we will be able to welcome you on another HF holiday in the future.

Kind regards

Service review:

It is unfortunate that several of the oversees holidays only have flights from London, unless people make their own travel arrangements - which means they are not fully covered for compensation if the holiday is cancelled by HF. There are flights from many airports in the north to those venues! Booking was a little complicated - I was booking for myself and a friend in single rooms, expecting to take responsibility for the whole transaction but because the online form required both addresses it was dealt with separately.

All the travel arrangements worked well, but I had to ask for the airline company booking ref to be able to check in online.

Product review:

The holiday program was excellent and the two guide, great fun. The walking arrangements worked well, but some of the walks were a bit boring. The sightseeing days in La Valletta and Mdina were excellent. The hotel was OK but not really 4*. We had buffet dinners for 5 nights, which were rather disappointing (specially the hot dishes). The a la carte dinners (2 nights) were excellent. Would be nice to eat out and try local specialities for at least one evening, say in Mdina.
