Choosing the level of your walks
Our easy grading system shows whether a region offer gentle strolls or more challenging routes to help you choose the right holiday for you. Difficulty is measured on many factors such as distance, ascent/descent, terrain, weather and more. There's no magic formula, but from our experience we grade our walks 1 to 5 (where 1 is easy and 5 hard). Our challenger holidays require a high level of fitness and stamina.
Reach new heights as we take on summits and cols that are normally 'off-limits' on our Guided Walking holidays. Stubai Alps High Routes Guided Walking Holiday Itinerary
Our High Routes holidays offer challenging high-level walks, reaching high summits and ridges normally out of reach on our Guided Walking holidays. These routes may be exposed and will often feature sections with fixed wires or ladders for reassurance. Whilst high levels of fitness and stamina are required, the rewards will be bird’s eye panoramas and an immense sense of achievement.
In the Stubai valley, you will have the opportunity to ‘bag’ up to four of the valley’s iconic ‘Seven Summits’ including one peak of over 10,000ft (3,000m).
8-13 miles with some rough, exposed, scrambly passages, scree sections and steep descents.
Up to 4,500 ft of ascent in a day.
Some of the possible walks include:
Threading the ‘Niederl’
A truly dramatic circuit from the valley passing a high-level glacial lake and then crossing a knife-edge ridge before descending to a high hut and back to the valley. This walk shows off the Stubai ‘Wild Water’ at its best. 10 miles (16km) with 3,600 feet (1,080m) of ascent.
The chance to ascend the Stubai’s most famous peak, towering over the entrance to the valley. We use the cable car to gain height and then pass a pretty monastery before traversing through woodland and then up through scree to a high pass and the summit cross with its stunning views. A long steep descent takes us back to the hotel. 12 miles (19km) with 4,200 feet (1,260m) of ascent.
Elfer and Zwolfer
A traverse of the ‘fairy castle’ overlooking Neustift, followed by a scramble onto its neighbouring peak. Magnificent rock scenery and fascinating geology. 9 miles (14km) with 3,100 feet (930m) of ascent.
The Stubai High Route
We ascend another of the Stubai ‘Seven Summits’, the Hoher Burgstall, then stay high, traversing across high passes down into a beautiful quiet side valley and a taxi back to the hotel. 12 miles (19km) with 3,000 feet (900m) of ascent.
Probably the most dramatic of our summits, this 3,000m peak is reached via a taxi into the Oberberg valley, then an ascent via the famous Franz Senn mountain hut. The sudden view of the Luener glacier is a ‘not to be missed’ moment. 10 miles (16km) with 4,200 feet (1,260m) of ascent.
A high summit overlooking the Mutterberg glacier area. We use the cable car, then on through rocks and scree to the airy summit with wonderful views of the surrounding peaks. A traverse is followed by a steep descent past a high hut and back past a wide waterfall into the valley. 7 miles (11km) with 2,400 feet (720m) of ascent.
Please note that the itinerary outlined above is provisional and could be subject to change. A finalised itinerary will be available at the resort and your leader will brief you every evening about the next day’s walks.
The capital of the Tyrol offers an interesting day out via bus or train. Places to visit include the Imperial Palace, Royal Gardens, cathedral and the Golden Roof, or perhaps just a stroll around the Old Town.
Using the Stubai Card, it is possible to ascend to the top stations above Mutterberg for wonderful views, and even to walk on the glacier with optional visits to the Ice Cave.
There are a number of local shops within a short walking distance of the hotel where you can obtain the basic necessities, ingredients for a packed lunch and plenty of gift shopping.
Our first visit to Neustift, it was relatively unspoilt little place. One day, returning to the hotel after a trip to the supermarket I heard the sound of an Alpenhorn coming from the church; curiosity drove me in to listen, and by wonderful happenstance I picked up a leaflet for a concert the next day. The next evening, a small group of us went down to a packed out church (mostly local people), and listened to a wonderful mellow sounding concert of featuring three Alpenhorns – you can see why they were used to communicate between mountains. It added a lovely and totally unexpected bit of spice to our holiday and we still reminisce about it now. (Colin, Salisbury)
