Accommodation

Stay in comfortable 3 to 4-star hotels, selected for their location and character. Some have outdoor swimming pools. A couple of the hotels are slightly more basic but their location more than makes up for any shortfall in comfort. The hotel in Sidemen is likely to be one of the highlights of the tour.

On arrival in Java, the first 2 nights are in the 4-star boutique hotel Gallery Prawirotaman in Jogkakarta. 94 bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities, and views of Mt Merapi to the north, Thousand Mountain Ridge to the south, or overlooking the outdoor swimming pools.

Next we travel to East Java to Surabaya for 1 night in the 4-star Singgasana Hotel. The hotel offers comfortable en-suite bedrooms, with spa centre and outdoor pool.

Into the highlands for 1 night at Mount Bromo Cottages or similar. This hotel is more basic, but the location is outstanding, at an altitude of 1,700m above sea level.

Our penultimate night on Java is at the Margo Utomo Hotel, a farm style hotel located in the heart of plantations near the village of Kalibaru.

We then finish our stay on Java with 1 night at the Ketapang Indah Hotel, a 3-star boutique hotel with tropical gardens and views overlooking the Bali strait.

After travelling by ferry to Bali we spend 2 nights at the Taman Sari resort in Pemutaran, on the unspoilt northwest side of the island. This is a 3-star boutique hotel, situated directly on the beach. Facilities include beachside pool and sunken bar.

Next we travel to Ubud and stay at the Ananda Cottages (1nt), a 3-star hotel built in traditional Balinese style. Our accommodation will be in deluxe rooms, surrounded by rice fields.

We have a 3 night stay in Sidemen at the Subak Tabola Villa. This is a 4-star boutique hotel, built in authentic Balinese style in an unforgettable location with stunning views of the rice fields and the Sidemen valley. There is an open air restaurant, and an outdoor swimming pool, situated in a lush tropical garden.

Continue to Lombok where we will spend our final 3 nights at the Cocotinos Hotel at Sekotong, a 4-star boutique hotel situated on Sekotong beach with gardens, pool, restaurant and spa.

Health advice

Travellers should be up to date with routine vaccination courses and boosters as recommended in the UK. These vaccinations include for example measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and diphtheria-tetanus-polio vaccine.

Before booking, you should check with your doctor to see if any health precautions are needed. The following websites provide a wealth of information on travelling and health: www.fitfortravel.co.uk  www.traveldoctor.co.uk

Climate

Indonesia has two seasons, wet and dry, with warm tropical temperatures averaging 28°C during the day, throughout the year. In most regions, the dry season spans from May to September, with the rains falling from October to April.

The best time to travel throughout Indonesia is really between May and September, although rain needn’t spoil your trip; in many places it only falls for a couple of hours daily, with much of the country managing perfectly well whatever the weather.

Money

The unit of currency in Indonesia is the Rupiah (Rp). Try to carry money in notes to the value of 20,000 Rp or less as you'll struggle to get change for the higher value notes. Exchange rate (Mar 2016) £1 = 19,035 Rp. ATMS are now increasingly common across Indonesia. Major credit cards are accepted in larger cities and tourist areas, but have sufficient Rp for less touristy areas. The US dollar is the most widely accepted foreign currency in Indonesia. Sterling, Euros, Australian currencies are only exchangeable in the most touristy areas of Java and Bali.
