Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival day

Day 2: Girgenti Walking Tour

On our first day out, our local guide will take us from the Buskett Gardens, one of Malta’s few woodlands, past prehistoric cart ruts and Ghar il-Kbar, a former cave settlement said to be Malta’s very first habitation. We will also pass the Girgenti Palace, the private residence of the Prime Minister of Malta. In the evening, we’ll play a friendly game of Bridge from 5pm, breaking for dinner.

Day 3: Treasures of Malta, Valletta & Mdina

Our adventure today starts in Valletta, Malta’s capital city, where we’ll visit St John’s Co-Cathedral, the Grandmaster’s Palace, and St Paul’s Catacombs. In the evening we’ll play a friendly game of Bridge from 6pm, breaking for dinner.

Day 4: Free day

On our 7-night holidays we allow one free day where there is no organised excursion. This is an ideal opportunity for you to relax, enjoy the hotel facilities or explore the area independently. In the evening we’ll play Bridge from 5pm, breaking for dinner.

Day 5: Delimara Walking Tour

Today our local guide will take us to the south of the island to walk along the coastline passing by St Thomas Bay, Xrobb L-Ghagin, and Delimara before ending at the fishing village of Marsaxlokk. In the evening we’ll play a game of Bridge from 5pm, breaking for dinner.

Day 6: Lemon Grove Tour

Today we’ll meet some local farmers in the picturesque valley on the outskirts of Dingli, who’ll take us through the process of fruit bearing, explain the importance of the climate and share a couple of homegrown produce tips. The tour ends with a tasting of homemade lemon jams, pickles and bakes at a local restaurant. The afternoon is free for you to relax and in the evening, we’ll play Bridge from 5pm, breaking for dinner.

Day 7: Victoria Lines Walking Tour

The Victoria Line - or as it was originally known the North West Wall - were built along the top of the escarpment known as the Great Fault line. This surprising geology feature divides the island of Malta in half and gives us a great scenic view. Our route takes one of the most spectacular and peaceful walking paths on the island and on a clear day you can also view the cliffs of Gozo. In the evening, we’ll play Bridge from 5pm, breaking for dinner.

Day 8 - Departure Day

Whats Included

Bridge

All your Bridge stationery and equipment will be supplied. You may, however, like to bring a notebook and pen to make your own notes. EBU Members - don’t forget to bring your EBU membership number to earn Master Points on this holiday.

Walking

To enjoy your walking comfortably and safely, it is essential that your footwear, clothing and equipment are suitable for the conditions likely to be encountered.

Bring a rucksack, a thermos flask for a hot drink, a water bottle (at least 1 litre) and spare high-energy food such as a chocolate bar, a small torch (in spring, autumn and winter) and first aid kit – your leader’s first aid kit doesn’t contain any medication or blister kits (such as Compeed). Many guests find walking poles useful, particularly for descents. Insect repellent, sun hat, sunglasses and protection cream and a camera are all optional extras you may choose to bring.

Local area

Gozo

Only 20minutes away from Malta by ferry, Gozo is about one third of Malta’s size and has a character quite distinct from its neighbouring island. It is more rural, with an extensive farming community and the countryside is greener and more scenic. Controls over building developments enabled Gozo to keep its rural charm. There are many historical sites to visit on Gozo, including: Ggantija temple site, Xewkija Church and Victoria, the capital of the island.

Comino

Named after the cumin seed that once flourished in the Maltese islands, Comino is noted for its tranquility and isolation. It has a permanent population of only four residents. One priest and one policeman commute from the nearby island of Gozo, to render their services to the local population and summertime visitors. Today, Comino is a bird sanctuary and nature reserve and can be reached by boat from Cirkewwa.

Valletta

The Capital City of Valletta, which is a fortified city, sitting on a peninsula between two natural harbours. The city was founded by the Order of St. John and named after their Grand Master, John de Vallette. When the Order left the islands in the late 18th Century, the French occupied Valletta, this was followed by British rule in the 19th Century. The city has many interesting and historic sites to visit, including churches, museums, and you can even take a harbor cruise, to see Valletta from a different vantage point. In 1980 it was named a UNESCO World Heritage site, and in 2018, Valletta is the European Capital of Culture. Valletta can be reached from Mellieha by local bus.

Did you Know?

The small island has 365 churches, one for every day of the year.
