Choosing the level of your walks

Our easy grading system shows whether a region offer gentle strolls or more challenging routes to help you choose the right holiday for you. Difficulty is measured on many factors such as distance, ascent/descent, terrain, weather and more. There's no magic formula, but from our experience we grade our walks 1 to 5 (where 1 is easy and 5 hard). Our challenger holidays require a high level of fitness and stamina.

We stay at the 4-star Moxa Boutique Hotel on Calea Victoriei, one of Bucharest’s oldest and most charming avenues, where cosy ensuite rooms combine sophisticated style with guest comfort. The hotel features free Wi-Fi, a lovely garden terrace and a spa/fitness centre. The hotel is ideally located in Bucharest and is within walking distance of much of the city’s key attractions.

Stay in Hotel Safrano in RomaniaBraşov: Hotel Safrano

We spend four nights in the charming city of Braşov, where we stay at the Hotel Safrano. This delightful 3-star hotel is in the heart of the city’s Old Town: it’s within walking distance of some of Braşov’s key attractions, including the Black Church, and enjoys great views to the stunning surrounding area. With 30 spacious rooms, each decorated in an individual style, enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi, tea and coffee making facilities, complimentary toiletries amongst the guest amenities. The hotel offers bicycle rental, should you wish to explore further.

Itinerary

A mixture of part-day city tours and full day walks of up to 10 miles (16km) with up to 2,450 feet (750m) of ascent. Trails can be rough and uneven underfoot and one walk follows a path which has steep drops and traverses a ridge.

These notes are intended to give you a good idea of the likely holiday itinerary. It may be necessary, however, for changes to be made in advance of the holiday as well as during, owing to local conditions – for example, unfavourable weather. Your local guide will advise you at the time if this is necessary.

Day 1: arrival in Bucharest

On arrival we transfer from the airport to Bucharest and our hotel. The rest of the day is then at leisure, giving you a chance to relax before our welcome dinner this evening.

Day 2: Bucharest

Today we enjoy a walking tour of Romania’s cosmopolitan capital city, well-known for its wide boulevards and fine pre-World War I buildings which lead to the city gaining the moniker “Little Paris”.

We walk along Calea Victoriei, where many key sights are located: the Romanian Athenaeum, the country’s foremost concert hall; the former Royal Palace and now home to the National Museum of Art; the Central Library; Cretulescu Church; former Senate building and National Museum of History, amongst others.

Our walking tour continues to the pedestrianised Old Town, where the National Bank of Romania is located. There’s time to explore before the remainder of the day is then at leisure either to explore the city further independently or return to the hotel.

Day 3: across the Carpathian Mountains

Today we travel north across the Carpathians to Brasov, where we spend the next 4 nights. Enroute, we stop in Sinaia, where we visit the beautiful Peles Castle.

The palace, built in the late 19th century for Romania’s first monarch, King Carol I, is set in a large park, with English-style landscaping. Outwardly, it resembles a Bavarian castle from the German Renaissance period. Inside, the palace has over 100 rooms richly decorated with a variety of materials, including ebony, leather and mother of pearl, and each room is individually styled based on a different country.

Astonishingly, the building has over 800 stained glass windows within its structure and there are fine examples of Renaissance armour, Murano chandeliers and Persian carpets within its walls. It was here in the Palace that Romania’s first cinema was established. Explore the palace and the wonders within it before we continue our journey to Braşov.

On arrival in Braşov, your local guide will offer a short orientation walk to introduce you to the town. Enjoy the remainder of the day at leisure before dinner.

Day 4: through the meadows from Mesendorf to Viscri

We depart for Mesendorf, where we begin today’s walk. We walk over the hills and through the meadows to Viscri, a beautiful Saxon village famous for its UNESCO listed fortified church built in the Romanesque style. Viscri also gained fame for the traditional house that HRH Prince Charles, Prince of Wales bought, restored and converted into a guesthouse for tourists.

These actions, along with the conversion of other similar properties, helped contribute to a better and sustainable future for the people living in rural Translyvania. Distance: 8 miles (13km) with 820 feet (250m) of ascent.

Day 5: Piatra Craiului Mountains

Today we explore the southern Carpathians in the Piatra Craiului National Park, an area protecting many species of flora and fauna, including fungi, lichens and mosses, flowers, herbs, insects and reptiles as well as over 100 species of birds, 15 species of bat and large mammals including chamois, wolves, brown bears and lynx.

We walk through this landscape and end with a visit to the famous Bran Castle, commonly known as Dracula’s Castle. Built by the Saxons in the late 14th century to defend Brasov from invasion by the Turks, its interiors display rich medieval furniture which was bought by Queen Marie in the 1920s when the castle was used as a royal residence.

Distance: 7½ miles (12km) with 1,150 feet (350m) of ascent.

Day 6: Fagaras Mountains

Enjoy a full day exploring one of the most beautiful and highest mountain ranges in Romania. We travel to Balea Lake, a glacial lake situated at over 2,000m above sea level. We may reach the lake by coach or cable car.

Our walk is along a narrow path, at times on rocky and uneven terrain and with some steep drops. As we cross the ridge, enjoy panoramic views over the surrounding glacial valleys and lakes below, before we descend and return to the lake from the opposite side on which be started. Distance: 4 miles (6km) with 2,450 feet (750m) of ascent.

Day 7: Bucegi Mountains

We start in Busteni, a small mountain resort in the Prahova Valley which gained popularity as a tourist destination at the end of the 19th century when King Carol I established several royal residences in the area.

From Busteni we take a cable car to the Babele station, passing a giant cross on Mt Caraiman – a World War I memorial.

On reaching Babele, take some time to marvel at the curiously shaped rock formations for which this place is known, before we walk to the Cota 2000 station, enjoy spectacular views as we go. A cable car ride down to Sinaia returns us to our transport and we continue to Bucharest. Distance: 8 miles (13km) with 350 feet (100m) of ascent.

This evening we enjoy a special farewell dinner with your fellow guests in a local restaurant and reminisce about the wonderful walks and spectacular scenery you’ve encountered this week.

Day 8: Departure day

After breakfast we depart the hotel and transfer to the airport for our flight home.
