Choosing the level of your walks
Our easy grading system shows whether a region offer gentle strolls or more challenging routes to help you choose the right holiday for you. Difficulty is measured on many factors such as distance, ascent/descent, terrain, weather and more. There's no magic formula, but from our experience we grade our walks 1 to 5 (where 1 is easy and 5 hard). Our challenger holidays require a high level of fitness and stamina.
Our Self-guided Walking holidays offer the chance to explore independently whilst following our carefully planned walks at your own pace. In this ‘chocolate box’ region of Switzerland, you will have opportunities to walk across flower-filled Alpine meadows and access mountain ridge walks via chairlifts and gondolas. These holidays offer Bed & Breakfast, with the option to add evening meals as you wish.
- A full programme of specially designed walks
- A comprehensive pack with maps and detailed route notes
- All transport to and from walks
- ‘With flight’ holidays include return flights from the UK and hotel transfers
- 7 nights' accommodation in en-suite rooms
- Bed & Breakfast – an extensive breakfast and the freedom to dine as you wish in the evenings (Half Board also available)

What better way to explore this quaint part of Switzerland than on a self-guided holiday in the knowledge that HF Holidays has taken care of everything for you? Our walks in Adelboden will take you along floral mountain trails, to the impressive waterfalls of Engstligen and the crystal clear lake of Oeschinensee. And in true Alpine style there are plenty of welcoming Alpine huts along the way to enjoy the local cuisine.
Your holiday price includes a transport pass for the local cable cars and buses so you have flexibility on your holiday. The pass covers all transport to and from your walks as well as some of the local attractions.
The village of Adelboden, located in the beautiful Bernese Oberland and surrounded by wonderful flowery meadows, green valleys and snow-capped peaks, epitomises the perfect image of Switzerland. This picturesque Swiss village lies at the head of the Engstligen Valley, surrounded by a succession of imposing peaks. The village sits on a sunny plateau at an altitude of 1,400 metres with excellent views south towards the Engstligen Waterfalls. In the winter Adelboden is an important ski resort that regularly hosts international downhill races.
It is not necessary to travel far on your free day as a relaxing time could be spent around the resort. The village has a large open-air swimming pool with free access for guests at the Hotel Waldhaus-Huldi. Tennis courts are also available locally. A particularly interesting walk from the hotel is to the exciting Cholerenschlucht, a deep and narrow gorge made accessible by stairs and walkways. A woodcarvers shop and café are nearby. A sketch map is available to facilitate walks here, taking a couple of hours or a whole day.
If you wish to travel further afield, Switzerland’s excellent integrated network of buses and trains could be used to reach one of these places:
Thun and Spiez
The popular lakeside resorts are accessible as part of a highly scenic bus, train and boat trip. Thun, with its castle and interesting old town, has a market on Wednesdays. A lake cruise will take you through breathtaking scenery back to Spiez for a look around before the return journey. Interlaken, situated nearby between lakes Thun and Brienz, can also be visited.
The Swiss capital of Bern can be visited by a bus and train journey of about an hour. The city has a fine medieval centre, together with an impressive 15th century Gothic cathedral and a wide selection of museums.
There are several mountain railways in the area which will take you high into breathtaking scenery. The Niesen Bahn is the closest. The Rothorn Bahn is a steam hauled rack railway from Brienz to the summit of the Rothorn. An even more expensive and longer day could get you to the eternal ice and snow of the Jungfraujoch, at 3,454m, the highest railway station in Europe. The Schilthorn Cable Car of James Bond fame also ascends from Lauterbrunnen. Tickets and timetables for these trips are available at the bus station or tourist information office in Adelboden.
Shops & facilities
There is a reasonable selection of shops on the main street including those selling walking equipment, clothes, souvenirs and food for picnic lunches. There is a supermarket (closed on Sundays) located just down the hill from the bus station. Stamps can either be bought from the post office, which is situated in the same building as the bus depot, or at any of the shops selling postcards. The village outdoor swimming pool is reached by a footpath through the garden and is free to guests of the Hotel Waldhaus-Huldi.
We recognise that everyone’s travel arrangements are unique, so all our holidays to Europe can be booked ‘with flight’ or ‘without flight’, giving you more flexibility and choice.
‘With flight’ holidays – the hassle-free option
Book your holiday ‘with flight’ and choose between Heathrow and Manchester flights to Geneva airport. For flight times and prices please see the Dates & Prices tab.
If you choose this option we automatically include return transfers between the airport and the hotel. The coach transfer takes approx 3 hours to the Hotel Waldhaus-Huldi.
‘Without flight’ holidays – the flexible travel option
Alternatively, tailor your journey to suit you by booking your holiday ‘without flight’ allowing you the freedom to book your own flights from your local airport.
There are many UK flights to Geneva but we would recommend joining our airport transfer due to the long journey into the Bernese Oberland.
Transfers are not included in the price for without flight holidays to Adelboden, however we can book you a seat on the HF Holidays’ transfer coach from Geneva airport. This is timed to meet the HF Holidays’ flights* (provisional flight times can be found on the dates and prices tab or you can call us on 020 8732 1220 for more information). Cost per single journey is £50.
* Please note that HF Holidays is not responsible for your onward travel if you fail to meet the transfer coach
