Choosing the level of your walks
Our easy grading system shows whether a region offer gentle strolls or more challenging routes to help you choose the right holiday for you. Difficulty is measured on many factors such as distance, ascent/descent, terrain, weather and more. There's no magic formula, but from our experience we grade our walks 1 to 5 (where 1 is easy and 5 hard). Our challenger holidays require a high level of fitness and stamina.
Our self-guided walking holidays offer the chance to explore independently whilst following our carefully planned walks at your own pace. This charming small Tyrolean town sits at the junction of four major valleys making it a perfect base from which to explore. These holidays offer Bed & Breakfast, with the option to add evening meals as you wish.

An introduction to the area
The popular Alpine resort of Mayrhofen is located in the Tyrol region of Austria and has a deserved reputation for its superb walking in the surrounding Zillertal Alps. From Mayrhofen itself, it is possible to travel by cable car high onto the slopes of the Penken or Ahorn for panoramic walks through the beautiful meadows. There are also enjoyable walks along the wooded valleys to the nearby villages of Brandberg and Finkenberg.
Mayrhofen is an attractive little town built on flat land where the four main valleys meet. Many of the buildings are built in traditional Tyrolean style. The village is lively, with a variety of shops and facilities all within a few minutes’ walk of the hotel.
Mayrhofen - Mayrhofen is an interesting small town in its own right and you may prefer a leisurely day visiting the shops that line the attractive main street and perhaps enjoying lunch in one of the pavement cafés. If you are feeling more active then a large outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts can be found within a short walk of the hotel. Mountain bikes can be hired in the town and there are numerous options for self-guided walks. Alternatively you could take a ride on the narrow gauge railway (sometimes steam hauled) to Jenbach.
Innsbruck - Easily reached by bus or train, Innsbruck, the historic capital of the Tyrol, offers an interesting day out whichever week or weeks you are visiting Mayrhofen. Places to visit include the Imperial Palace, the Royal Gardens, the cathedral and various churches of particular interest. Guided coach tours are available, whilst the old town is an attractive area for strolling and sightseeing.
Achensee - A popular excursion is to take the narrow-gauge railway from Mayrhofen to Jenbach, and then the steam-operated rack and pinion railway to the Achensee. Dating from 1889, this is the oldest steam-operated cog railway in the world. The Achensee itself is a particularly attractive lake, and boat trips or easy walks are available.
Krimml Waterfalls - Reached by bus, Krimml is a picturesque town set against a backdrop of densely wooded mountains that climb to heights of 3,000 metres. The waterfalls, 380 metres high, are the highest in Europe, and are a spectacular sight as they cascade down the entrance of the Krimmler Valley.
Hintertux Glacier - A regular bus service up the valley to Hintertux gives access to a series of cable cars up to the glaciers which lie at an altitude of over 3,200 metres (10,500 feet). If you’re feeling adventurous then skiing is available here throughout the year.
Shops & facilities:
There is a good variety of shops, including several supermarkets, bakeries, a chemist and local crafts. There is a full programme of summer events in the town, including concerts, dances and folklore events organised by the Mayrhofen Tourist Office. Sports Facilities include indoor and outdoor swimming pools, mini golf, tennis courts, ten-pin bowling, cycle hire and riding stables.
We recognise that everyone’s travel arrangements are unique, so all our holidays to Europe can be booked ‘with flight’ or ‘without flight’, giving you more flexibility and choice.
‘With flight’ holidays – the hassle-free option
Book your holiday ‘with flight’ and choose between Heathrow or Manchester (via Heathrow) flights to Innsbruck airport. For flight times and prices please see the Dates & Prices tab.
If you choose this option we automatically include return transfers between the airport and the hotel. The coach transfer takes approx 1 hours 15 minutes to the Hotel Waldheim.

If you choose this option, transfers are not included in the price. However, we can book you a seat on the HF Holidays’ transfer coach from Innsbruck airport. This is timed to meet the HF Holidays’ flights* (provisional flight times can be found on the dates and prices tab or you can call us on 020 8732 1220 for more information). Cost per single journey is £35.00.
Transfers must be pre-booked. Please call 020 8732 1220 for more details
* Please note that HF Holidays is not responsible for your onward travel if you fail to meet the transfer coach
One of the many highlights of our holiday in Mayrhofen is the use of public transport to and from our walks. Each guest is provided with a “Z card”, which covers transport on the post bus, train, gondola and chairlifts. The “Z card” has a host of benefits such as free admission into all six outdoor swimming pools in the valley and various other discounts in and around Zillertal – very useful for your free day!
