Sometimes things happen beyond our control – the weather, traffic jams or changes at the places we visit. If we need to adjust your holiday programme, for whatever reason, your leader will help smooth the way.

Arrival day

Portimão, Alvor, Lagos and Cabo de São Vicente

Our first stop today is Portimão where we enjoy a stroll through the old harbour and along the riverside gardens before heading to Alvor. Alvor has retained its fishing village charm and we’ll explore its maze of cobbled streets. Our next stop is Lagos, where the 16th century city walls enclose the old town’s pretty streets, picturesque plaza and churches. Our last stop of the day is Cabo de São Vicente, Europe’s south western most point.

Faro, Loulé and Milreu

We start the day in Algarve’s capital, Faro, where we explore the winding cobbled streets of the historic old town and some of the buildings within it. From here we head inland to Loulé where we can enjoy the attractive old quarter and see the local artisan traditions of basket making and embroidery. Our final stop is the ruins of a grand Roman villa at Milreu.

Tavira, Vila Real de Santo Antonio, Castro Marim and Alcoutim

We 'll explore Tavira, and some of its historic attractions. From here we’ll head to the Spanish border, visiting Vila Real de Santo Antonio and Castro Marim with its huge hilltop castle, before taking a scenic drive up the Guadiana to Alcoutim.

Free Day

This is an ideal opportunity for you to relax, enjoy the hotel facilities or explore independently.

Silves, São Bartolomeu de Messines, Alte and Paderne

Silves is a gorgeous town of jumbling orange rooftops and boasts one of the best preserved castles in the Algarve. We begin our day here before travelling inland, through lush green countryside to São Bartolomeu de Messines, birthplace of one of the Algarve’s most famous poets and home to a lovely church and 17th and 18th century houses. From here we continue to the attractive village of Alte, with spotless cottages displaying patios and balconies overflowing with flowers. Our final stop of the day is Paderne, a typical country village with some beautiful dusty pink and faded coral facades on its buildings.

Monchique and Aljezur

Today we’ll Travel north and inland to the wooded mountain area of Serra de Monchiue which separates the Algarve and the Alentaja to visit the market town of Monchique. The centre of Monchique is a characterised by lots of narrow cobbled streets set on a hillside, and has a very relaxed pace which is ideal for pottering around and appreciating the fantastic views. In the afternoon we’ll visit Aljezur, established by Berbers in the 10th century and the Islamic influence in the area can be seen in Aljezur's castle (Castelo de Aljezur). Aljezur is divided into old and new quarters by a small stream - the Ribeira de Aljezur. An earthquake in 1755 badly damaged the old town so a new church and surrounding new town was planned and built on the instructions of Bishop Francisco Gomes de Avelar.

Departure Day

What to bring

Suitable, comfortable footwear for rough, wet or uneven terrain

Local area

Luz

Luz is believed to have been inhabited since Neolithic times, due to several ancient artefacts being discovered in the town. The Romans also settled here; there are ruins of the Roman baths in the town. Following the Romans, the Moors colonised the area, and brought with them fruit trees, which now flourish in the area. The bay of Luz also has an interesting Geology, although most of the western Algarve is limestone, Luz also had sandstone bedrock, and is bounded by the Rocha Negro, a black igneous outcrop, which shelters the bay. Today, Luz is a lively resort, with a beautiful beach and plenty of attractions including the Church of Our Lady of Light and the Roman baths.

Lagos

Also a town with a rich history, Lagos is larger than Luz, and has been settled by a variety of people, from the Romans to the Visigoths and later the Byzantines. As a result, there are plenty of churches, museums and cafes to explore. The harbour is a site of historical significance and boat trips run from here along the coast. You can reach Lagos by bus from Luz.

Cape St. Vincent

Sacrid ground for centuries, Cape St. Vincent takes its name from Vincent of Saragossa, whose bones, legend says, were laid to rest here. These were later transported to Lisbon in the 12th Century. The headland was the site of a Monastery until it was mostly destroyed by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The current lighthouse that stands on the cape was built in the 19th Century on the site of the Monastery and is powerful enough to be seen from 60km away.
