Magical memories made as part of our work with the Family Holiday Charity
In February we were delighted to welcome 12 families on to a 3-night Feel Good Break staying at our country house, Peveril of the Peak, in the Peak District.
The break was organised in conjunction with the Family Holiday Charity (formally the Family Holiday Association) who work with families who really need a holiday but would not otherwise get to enjoy any sort of holiday due to their personal circumstances. It’s easy to become complacent about how important holidays away are to our wellbeing; for the families involved, they can be a real lifeline.
Such breaks are made possible by using funds donated by guests to the Pathways Fund.
The Pathways Fund
In a nutshell
These Feel Good Breaks give nominated families the gift of a break away in the outdoors. They also give the opportunity for them to discover the British countryside with their own and other families in conjunction with their support workers. For many families, it will be the only break away they’ve had in a considerable amount of time – or ever.
The families visiting the Peak District enjoyed walking up to Thorpe Cloud, crossing over the River Dove using the stepping-stones, going up to the Heights of Abraham by cable car and exploring the grounds of Ilam Hall. They also enjoyed playing Pooh Sticks and taking part in the HF Olympics! Some participants were on their first ever holiday together while others were out walking in the countryside for the first time. Huge thanks to our partner Rohan for supplying outdoor kit through their GiftYourGear initiative.
A fun and fantastic weekend was enjoyed by all involved despite it raining some of the time and the muddy state of some of the footpaths. Indeed, the mud seemed to add to the enjoyment for many!

HF Leaders Chris and Mervyn said:
“Both the parents and the children were so thrilled by the experience and were able to set aside their everyday stresses and strains and make some new friends. The incessant rain did not seem to upset them at all, and some of the children seemed to delight in rolling in the puddles and mud. The outing to Heights of Abraham was a generous and memorable experience for us all!
Gabriela and the staff team at Peveril of the Peak were relaxed and supportive and had given lots of consideration about the meals and snacks to keep everyone well-fed. All in all, it was a great experience for us to be part of as leaders, and we felt humbled by some of the challenges that the parents are contending with. Thank you for giving us this appointment. “
Thank you to everyone who has donated to the Pathways Fund. Your donations really do make a difference.
